632004 2008-01-20 03:45:00 We have a large tree at our house which we want cut down (as it hangs over the top of our garage, and will cause problems if we let it grow any more). What sort of ballpark figure do these places usually charge for this sort of service? I've heard horror stories of elderly people being charged thousands for minor jobs by con artists. somebody (208)
632005 2008-01-20 03:48:00 Lots.
Especially if its big. Ring a few and get quotes.
If you live in any kind of city expect to get permits from the council too.

The best thing would be to do it yourself or if you can't find a friend who can.

It's too large for someone like me - I don't have the time, equipment, or skill to do it safely. I'll give a few places a call and see what they say. The tree is probably about 8m tall, and is growing within 2m of a garage (and currently overhangs at least half of it).

632007 2008-01-20 03:55:00 $200 - $300 is what we were charged for a very large tree, you can negotiate price depending on whether or not you want the wood to use in your fireplace. zqwerty (97)

Thanks zqwerty. Will be keen to see what these places quote, given that it is in quite an inconvenient place (i.e. it's between the road and the garage, with stuff in between on all sides, so they won't be able to just cut it at the base and let it fall over).

632009 2008-01-20 04:52:00 Quite easy to go up tree and use harness, since the tree will have to be chopped up anyway for firewood the location and surrounding obstacles don't matter too much as long as there is some clear area that cut off bits can be lowered to, I have seen two very large trees dealt to in this way, because they could not just be felled.

Half a days work for two men for each tree, and they weren't really going for it, lol.

What part of the country are you in?
I would use TREESCAPE ph 0800TREEWORK they are professional, the chip from the tree and firewood could pay a lot of the felling and cutting up.
I cut a tree down 10 years ago but it spun thru 180 degrees as it fell and took out my garage.
It was still cheaper to fix garage than get get it proffesionaly cut up.

Do not forget to get permission from the Greens. Then there is the RMA and a two year delay while various people push their agenda(s)

If it is a native tree at that height do not expect this to happen in your lifetime.
