631883 2008-01-19 22:32:00 We're going through new exterior security lights at a rapid rate. Sensors fail, lights don't function, sometimes after only a few weeks.

Can anyone recommend a reliable brand of NZ security lights with movement sensors? Any tips appreciated!

Thanks

631884 2008-01-19 22:59:00 maybe it would help if you also said what brands you had, and where you got the ones in the past?
and where are they situated on the building ? in the weather or sheltered like?

631885 2008-01-19 23:11:00 The brands I do not know - my mother bought them, probably from somewhere like the Warehouse.

Some of the lights are outside, exposed to weather. Others are partially shielded, like under eaves.

I can't understand why people buy stuff like that from the warehouse, as a lot of the stuff they sell is rubbish, and isn't made to last, and you get what you pay for. Try mastertrade, as they will tell you a good brand to get, as they supply electricians.

631887 2008-01-20 00:37:00 We got a couple of them from The Warehouse about 6 years ago, they are still going fine, sensors work well, no blown bulbs. roddy_boy (4115)
631888 2008-01-20 00:38:00 sensor lights on my house have been there since we got the house. The house was almost 3 yr old when we got it and we have been here 6 years, never replaced a bulb at all, never had any problems with them at all. Bantu (52)
631889 2008-01-20 00:42:00 Local Electrician installed the following sensor last May and I have had no problem at all with it.

He said it was very good brand. It is installed under the eaves, so cannot comment as to their suitability when positioned without cover.

631890 2008-01-20 03:51:00 I'm told Arlec is a reasonably reliable brand - get from Bunnings, Mitre 10 Mega, Hammer hardware etc.

You can get DIY lamps which fit over a standard lampholder (works best if you're placing the lights under an eave where there already is a standard lamp circuit or batten holder) or you can have one hardwired into the circuit.

Buy DIY units from here (www.mitre10.co.nz)

Buy hardwired units from here. (www.mitre10.co.nz)

Not sure if M10 Mega stocks Arlec fittings tho...

631891 2008-01-20 08:27:00 I went down the route of a separate sensor and halogen flood lights. Sensor brand was Steinel. I bought the lot from the local electrical supplies wholesaler. Units are both fully exposed to the weather and have run without failure for 9 years. Note as cheap as the combined units but I guess you get what you pay for. tutaenui (1724)
