785699 2009-06-25 07:12:00 Log into the computer as administrator - start the PC, keep tapping F8 - select safe mode, when the accounts appear select Administrator.

Go to C: Drive, documents and settings - see if your missing account folder is there, if it is, copy all the account / documents to a removable drive for safety.

Then reboot, log into a existing account or create a new one from Control Panel / Users. ( not the same name as the old one)

Log into this new account:

Right-click My Computer, and select Properties.
Select the Advanced tab.
Click the Settings button in the User Profiles section.
Select the user account that was corrupted.
Click the Copy To button.
Click Browse button and then browse For Folder dialog box to locate the Documents and Settings folder and select the new account.

A confirmation dialog box should appear that informs you that the original files will be deleted and prompts you to confirm the copy operation.
Click Yes.
Once the profile is copied, log off from the system and login again with the new username. All the settings of the old account will be copied.

Edited: bit more Indepth Details here (blogs.techrepublic.com.com) - includes pictures.

785700 2009-06-25 07:23:00 Uh oh...HD corruption :xmouth

What I would do first, is perform a chkdsk.

open command prompt, type chkdsk X: /f

Replace X with your System drive letter, most probably C

Wait for it to finish, then reboot.

Then, right click My Computer on the start menu>Properties>advanced>Under User Profiles select settings>See if your old account is still there.

If it is, make a new account and select "Copy to" to the new account.

EDIT: WT, you bet me to it!:p

785701 2009-06-25 19:27:00 i hope you fullas are still there but when i go to my computer, advanced, user profiles, the profile that was corrupted is there but when i click on it the copy to button is greyed out so i can't do the copy to and paste trick you suggested! also chkdsk would not run either and the following message is displayed

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

785702 2009-06-25 19:37:00 did you try in safe mode as Wainui suggested? gary67 (56)
785703 2009-06-25 21:42:00 Its greyed out because if you're logged into that account you can't move it!:p

Log in as another user, i.e Administrator as mentioned before.

As for the chkdsk, select Y and reboot.
