633080 2008-01-24 05:42:00 Nice.

But, Thats your opinion, I have mine already and I'm quite happy with it. So trying to change my views is pretty much a waste of your time.

I was not intending to try and change your views at all. Your previous posts on many other subjects make it obvious there is only one point of view worth anything in your life.

I was simply giving you the benefit of my opinion. I can't imagine anyone changing your attitude or your views.

Can you bend spoons by any chance?

No.
I'm retired.

633084 2008-01-24 09:58:00 He was a hero in the traditional sense of the word, literally a mountain of a man who achieved many great things, and it will be a long time before we see another like him, if ever. We don't have to have a holiday named after him, but maybe we could have a 'New Zealand' day or a 'New Zealanders' day that is celebrated on either July 20th or May 29th as our low-key way of paying annual respect to Sir Ed, without actually making a big fuss about the gentleman. Then maybe New Zealanders could spend that day making their place a better place to live....... andrew93 (249)

Right on, Andrew!! I think he would rather we had scholarships (or sponsorships) to benefit a Nepalese and a New Zealander. Maybe with each spending some time in the other country.

I would like to see a 'New Zealand' day, also. One for all New Zealanders, without placing an accent on any particular race.

Have to agree wholeheartedly, Andrew and Marnie. That was his main wish for his work to in Nepal to continue. There was a clip from an old interview that they played a few times where he said just that. Perhaps some were elsewhere when that was shown. He made it clear that he did not want a memorial - besides he has one or two: statue at Mt Cook, Hillary Square Orewa, Hillary School Papakura and picture on the $5 note to mention only a few.

Marnie: There was a New Zealand Day, but after protests it was changed back to Waitangi Day.

Perhaps a New Zealand Day could honour all our famous kiwis. People such as Earnest Rutherford or Kiri Te Kanawa and surely then you could slip in Sir Ed's name now and then?

633088 2008-01-25 04:24:00 And once you add Kate Sheppard & Charles Goldie to the list that's about it isn't it? :) The majority of artists & musicians are forgotten with the passage of time, as are most politicians, so I wouldn't want to see too many people added to the list who are alive today (except possibly Peter Jackson). Maybe commemorate dead Kiwis who made this world a better place? andrew93 (249)
