Before you make such a stupid remark, do try to read about his accomplishments. Did you not view / read about / hear any of the state funeral, documentaries, or commentaries about this great man?

:waughh:

I know he did more than that, and no I didn't bother watching / listening / reading anything to do with his funeral. He was already on the news just about every damn day of the week.

I mean, he's already on the $5 note! He didn't get put there because of his other accomplishments, did he?

Fair point. He was fairly well recognised in his own lifetime, he was in the highest order of knighthood. And most of us see his image every day. The last funeral like his was the unknown soldier, and I can't think of one before that (mind you, I'm only 23). He climbed a mountain, and went on long cold walks quite far south, but really he did it for himself, and for his own beliefs. If you want a day off to celebrate him then take annual leave.

Hone Tuwhare died at the same time, and got next to no coverage. Also, his wishes were expressly ignored and nobody cared. He wanted to be cremated and scattered in all the harbours of NZ, and didn't care about maori protocol said the Dominion Post. A week later we hear he's buried next to his mum in a maori graveyard somewhere...

But bring on a mid year holiday. Make it aunty Helens' B'day just to make Cicero happy.

633073 2008-01-23 23:12:00 You seem to say, Metla, from your last post, that because Sir Ed is dead, that he can have no further say. But if you were listening (on one of his many interviews shown just lately) and you read Laura's thread, you would know that Sir Ed said that he did not want any memorial, he just wanted his work in Nepal to continue. He said that more than once. Do you not respect the wishes of a dead person?

Any monument or act is for the people of NZ to remember and honour him, Its by the people, for the people.

Bad luck if he didn't want a fuss made about his life and death.

633074 2008-01-24 01:36:00 Metla: Surely you would like your last wishes respected, famous or not?

As you say, any monument is up to the people, but how many of would feel uncomfortable ignoring his (or anyone's) last request?

And as for him being on the $5 note: it is an extremely rare honour. It is an honour that would normally only be extended to someone who has died. In that way the government would be certain that the person would not do something unseemly and no longer be considered worthy.

Sir Ed was afforded that honour before he died so the government were very certain that he would not blot his copybook. Speaks volumes, don't you think? No-one (to my knowledge) has been afforded that honour before.

633076 2008-01-24 03:29:00 I choose no, to me its like that guy never took a day off. It would be more honouring to him to keep on going (to reach the top of the mountain I guess even if it sounds a little cheesey). rob_on_guitar (4196)

Nice.

But, Thats your opinion, I have mine already and I'm quite happy with it. So trying to change my views is pretty much a waste of your time.

What's your point? England have enough people to commemorate as it is.

But what the hell was with TVNZ suggesting Mount Cook become Mount Hillary? One climbed a mountain for the first time, the other effectively DISCOVERED New Zealand. Abel Tasman/Maori/Mori Ori excepted. He was old, he died, death is sad. But the media is silly, just let everyone get on with it. Maybe some streets, maybe a smaller mountain if the cartographers feel generous. But for christs sakes not that one.

633079 2008-01-24 04:00:00 What is the motive for climbing mountains,I doubt its to do with making NZ look good. Cicero (40)
