632177 2008-01-21 05:28:00 Hmmm. I see on TradeMe (www.trademe.co.nz) there's a few Mercedes E and C class models, circa '98 and '99 with modest mileage within my price range. Hmmm

ps - don't for a moment think I'm considering an A class!!!!

632178 2008-01-21 05:35:00 While I'm not a mechanic, and don't claim to be. Stay away from all european cars imported from Japan.
My best mate has made a very healthy living from these cars over the last 10 years for me to say stay away. While your not going to have problems with all of them, it's not you who decides if it's a lemon or not.

632179 2008-01-21 07:24:00 The Germans make great cars, but a strong Euro etc etc, makes them very expensive to run, parts cost a bomb, and they are a bit beyond your average local garage mechanic in most cases. Anything European via Japan is a pig in a poke.

Many Jap owners have a pretty slack attitude to routine and preventative maintenance, and small things like Oil changes and filter changes regularly get missed - real bad news with diesels and also Turbo petrol engines.

If you buy a Jap import - Change the oils (use a good detergent oil) and filters, and do another Oil and Filter Change after 1000-1500 km - you'll be surprised how much crap there will be in the oil.

632180 2008-01-21 07:40:00 The Euro-cars are pretty variable. Alas, none of them age gracefully, and the inconvenience of your mechanic spending his weekends in Hawaii is a bit annoying. R2x1 (4628)
632181 2008-01-21 19:39:00 Not sure if that is right about white cars I had a white car and it crashed.
Although I was pissed, driving back from the Renwick Tavern.
I had a purple Valiant Ranger I never crashed that maybe Purple is the right colour for a car.

Careful recollection leads me to believe that cars leaving the Renwick Tavern were a bit accident prone on the best of days. They often tended to attempt a non-bridge crossing of the river just west of Woodbourne. My Norton Dominator was particularly bad in that respect too. A very nasty stretch of hazardous terrain there.
(If your car hadn't been a white one, it probably would have been belly up in the tavern carpark.)

I've got a german friend, and he says stay away from all german cars, as they aren't as reliable as japanese, and parts are expensive. I recommend staying away from all european cars. Not to mention that they are expensive to service in NZ. If you encounter an electrical problem, you may have to go to a dealer garage to get any problems fully sorted, as usually only they have the computer and equipment to hook it up to.

I've owned a few euro cars, but after reading the dog and lemon guide, never again, unless I become rich and don't intend keeping it for more than 3 years from new.
