631872 2008-01-21 02:01:00 What NZ needs is an uprated transmission line from Manapouri to Auckland and there is a need to build more generators.
The poor buggers like the dudes who want to make a gas fired generator at Helensville and the dudes who want to up make a new pylon run into Auckland get shot down in flames.
We are going to be !@#$%^ over soon when the the big black out happens.
Then and only then will the electrical infrastructure be built under urgency over the whinging of some selfish landowners.
!@#$ if my piss fridge goes warm some bastard is going to pay for it.

631873 2008-01-21 06:04:00 I have a friend that worked as a Nuclear Scientist in USA. She has been very sick now for a few years and only one of her workmates remains alive and who is also sick.

I would not like to see Nuclear anything here even if it does sound like a simple solution. It might not effect me in the last decade or so i have left but I would not like to see my kids or grand kids affected by stupid decisions longer term.

Really? My uncle was a nuclear scientist for the US Govt from about 1960 to 1990 and he is absolutely fine. Maybe she's not a very good and careful scientist?:P

I mean there was that TV station in Oz whose female employees kept getting cancer and dying, should we close down or not even operate TV stations? Its people like you who are putting in jeopardy this future you keep talking about for your grandkids.

631875 2008-01-21 23:50:00 Simple - As already mentioned, there is a big disparity between the peak load and night time minimum load. Remedy is to balance the load by putting everyone on rotating shifts, thus spreading the load evenly.
This means we have sufficient spare capacity for years and years.
As a 24/7 shiftworker in the electricity generation business this suits me well.
Primary school kids starting their shift at midnight might take getting used to but hey...
