Any employers in here? I'm sure they would be more than happy to answer that question...:p

Hey - they can have a holiday too! :D

633062 2008-01-23 11:44:00 A completely ridiculous idea!

The man himself would be horrified...

He made that clear when asked some time back what he wished for as a remembrance.

No statues or monuments in his name, he said.
Instead he hoped for a continuation of his work providing health care & education for the Sherpas.

I interviewed him once.
He didn't have much small talk beforehand.
I could see he was basically putting up with the interview because it was publicising a funds appeal for his beloved Sherpas.
Naturally he was polite about it - the perfect gentleman.

But I can imagine what he'd say to people who simply want a new holiday with his name tacked on it.
He wouldn't be as polite to what could seem a self-serving bunch - as opposed to people who made an effort to follow his own wishes.

Isn't he busy being dead?

I'm afraid he has lost his opportunity for input.

633066 2008-01-23 19:39:00 You seem to say, Metla, from your last post, that because Sir Ed is dead, that he can have no further say. But if you were listening (on one of his many interviews shown just lately) and you read Laura's thread, you would know that Sir Ed said that he did not want any memorial, he just wanted his work in Nepal to continue. He said that more than once. Do you not respect the wishes of a dead person?

I agree with Laura. Why would he want a holiday with his name tacked onto it? It would mean virtually nothing to most. Just make certain that when the day falls in the middle of the week, the holiday is moved to Monday or Friday so we can all have a long weekend. That's what happens with most other holidays. Who cares what the holiday commemorates? Let's go to the bach for the weekend.

I don't have any objection to a long weekend - love it, but I do have a very strong objection to going against the wishes of someone who made it very clear what he did and did not want. Going against those wishes is sacrilege.

633067 2008-01-23 20:33:00 That's a good point Roscoe. Still go ahead with it - but just call it the "Mid-Winters Public Holiday". wratterus (105)
633068 2008-01-23 20:42:00 all he did was climb a mountain, plus he had a group of people with him.

:horrified

Before you make such a stupid remark, do try to read about his accomplishments. Did you not view / read about / hear any of the state funeral, documentaries, or commentaries about this great man?

633069 2008-01-23 22:13:00 Strange co-incidence. I have just signed one of the condolences books from North Shore City Council about 5 minutes ago. The almost universally expressed opinion is that any donation should wind up helping the Sherpas. No need for a monument to a man who was one. R2x1 (4628)
