632972 2008-01-23 03:49:00 What you need to do is get both contracts side by side and see what the difference is plod (107)
632973 2008-01-23 20:09:00 Mm, I have, but they're much of a muchness. But like Laura said, it is a bit of a gamble. In all honesty, I don't know how much the union fees are, but for a six-month employment, I can't be bothered with a union anyway, since if I do lose my job, it's no biggie. Thanks guys. ubergeek85 (131)
632974 2008-01-24 04:14:00 joining a union could get you a payrise straight away:-). Back in the day at countdown people were joinin the union cos they were sure they'd get a rise. funny thing is thou that the rise didnt change a thing cos the extra money they got went straight back as union fees hueybot3000 (3646)
632975 2008-01-24 07:48:00 After you have worked at Countdown for six months you become eligible for staff discount, want to guess how much, 5%, so that means for every $100 you spend they will give you $5 off. We should be rioting in the streets, let alone joining the Union. zqwerty (97)
632976 2008-01-24 08:05:00 Supermarkets don't make a big margin on the goods they sell, they rely more on quantity of items sold. So 5% is actually OK. pine-o-cleen (2955)
632977 2008-01-24 09:19:00 Why should the Supermarket make any money out of employees purchases, if they truly valued them they would let them have decent perks. Employees should get goods at cost price.

I don't believe the Supermarkets are struggling to stay afloat, I have watched the modifications to the Countdown Supermarket in Moorhouse Avenue Chch on the old Big Fresh site for a year now and they are in no hurry at all to be open for business, they must be rolling in money.

The workers get rewarded for their hours at work via their pay packet,

If they want more then they have the same opportunity as anyone else to either work hard and smart to make their way up the ladder, or leave.

If they find themselves stuck at the bottom , then chances are thats where they belong. No need to give them anything.

So what is a perk? You sign a contract or not as the case may be. If your contract mentions employees get goods at cost what is to stop you from supplying the whole of your family with the goods at cost. So I go to work in a Supermarket and buy $5000 worth per week at cost.

Good idea but I do not think that would work. Well I would not employ you for very long anyway if you did that.

632980 2008-01-24 09:51:00 I was on various contracts for 9 years (97-2006)

(Temp, none of them were fulltime lol) .

But I was working the same amount of hrs as everyone else (even tho I was only a temp) .

Most of them were between 3- 18 mths .

It didnt matter what the length was, I always had a contract .

Only one of the jobs, I think I chose the Individual contract .

Didnt go in a union .

Back in 1992, I did, but found it was a waste of time and money .

They never did anything for us/me . So . I opted out .

I was made redundant . After 6 1/2 years

Due to restructuring, and was also paid redundancy .

They werent going to pay me, but they did .

But yup, youre right, the advantage of being in a union is, you get the payrise, when it happens .

The contracts shouldnt be different, they should be exactly the same .

Unless you discuss and review it, then change something

And agree to the contract . Then sign it

632981 2008-01-24 10:05:00 I have a new word to introduce all you Right Wingers to:

reification

1. Regarding something abstract as a material thing

2. Representing a human being as a physical thing deprived of personal qualities or individuality

"according to Marx, treating labour as a commodity exemplified the reification of the individual"

You should be ashamed of yourselves.
