Flights, jet lag (both ends) etc. Not everyone can drop every other commitment at the drop of a hat to submit to this assault on one's mental and physical stamina. Are the royals different from other human beings? I think not. A memorial service in the UK at a date that works for those giving it is a high honour and eminently sensible. Get real. |

Don't the stars mean anything? Just remove the Union Jack was my suggestion. Keep the stars for a new flag. The flag aside, I do feel the Royal Family has a duty to attend such events, especially since Sir Ed was knighted! |

Plus it is a NZ event, so they probably wouldn't want to overshadow the thing. Does the queen normally come to state funerals anyway? She is also very old too, so such a trip would be very exhausting and takes a lot of time to plan. I think the private ceremony in UK at a later date is far more special. |

| 632589 | 2008-01-22 01:41:00 | It is usually the younger generation who recommend getting a new flag, but noone has actually come up with a stunning flag replacement that people like and reflects NZ. The current flag has a lot of history, especially for those who fought under it, and it shouldn't be replaced just because a certain generation of NZers think that it doesn't reflect them. | robbyp (2751) | ||
| 632590 | 2008-01-22 05:48:00 | You can not replace the NZ flag people have died under it overseas defending the country. End of story. Unless you are a labour dude who wants a republic. Dont mention Canada they are clayton yanks anyway. C1 |

Even if it takes a fast car trip to do so. As for people getting their nickers in a twist about the royals not coming. They all have very full calendars and only ever go to the funerals for heads of state or the Pope otherwise their calendars would be thrown out too often. They are having a memorial service in a certain chapel which is rare and an appropriate response. |

| 632593 | 2008-01-22 19:04:00 | I can't see any connection between the flag or a republic, and whether or not the royal family attended the funeral of Sir Edmund Hillary. Do we hear Americans calling for their country to become a monarchy - or to change the flag- whenever their president is criticised? Of course not. Most of us support both the current flag and the monarchy. Sir Ed was a keen supporter of both. In any case there was no snub. The Queen was represented- as is normal- by the Governor General (who Helen Clark upstaged, as expected), and there will be a commemoration service at Windsor which several members of the royal family will be attending. If a member should have come here blame must rest with the government which advised the Queen not to send anyone. | royalcourtier (13313) | ||
