For a low use, low limit card it is probably reasonably pointless going for rewards so you really need to look at the fees. The only card without an annual fee is the Kiwibank Mastercard Zero. Other cards have fees from $18 upwards. The interest rate should be totally irrelevant to anyone who uses their card properly but, just in case you do foul up one month, this card also has the lowest rate of 15.9%. We use our card for everything - home, business, Mum's shopping... (and pay it off automatically monthly) so rewards are relevant. We'd probably be better with the ASB card (better rewards I think) but laziness and habit have us using the BNZ one for Flybuys. Their web site sucks. Just bear in mind a lot of banks offer student packages with fee-free credit cards. They want to suck students in, and get them stuck there so once they graduate they can make money off fees etc. |

Just wait till she graduates... But she does use her low limit credit card sensibly - most of the time. |

So at the moment Kiwi Bank looks to be good. i dont really care about the interest rates because i will always pay back before i get charged any interest. i want to pay less admin & anual fees. also do i need to worry between master and visa? Visa seems to be popular if i am not wrong. | gum digger (6100) | ||

But not having verified that for myself it could just be an obscure rumour. And it could have changed anyway. We use Visa because.... well we just do. |

You'll pay for it in fees and lack of rewards, with no benefit as you will never pay interest (if things go as planned). I use the Thouroughbred Gold because of the excellent service and rewards (1% cash back). However I really just recommend you get the card your bank offers, and don't worry about going to a different bank just for the card. How much do you plan on spending on the card per year? If it's more than about $5000 (ie $100 per week), then rewards are a factor and I would recommend the National Bank Thouroughbred card for its cash back scheme. If you just buy the occasional thing online or something, it really doesn't matter what you have, so just get the lowest fee card from your bank (free, preferably). |

Significant fee and interest savings - and we get the odd Flybuys toy as a reward. The GPS was great fun over the last couple of weeks whilst away in the bus. But you need to put a lot through the visa to get the toys. And for low use rewards just don't stack up. |

| 632385 | 2008-01-22 07:55:00 | I use the low interest visa card thru national bank.I think it was 12% interest.Better than my old one which was 19% .With the old on you earn credit card points but it was useless though. It was something like spend $1000 and get $10 back.So the low interest with no credit card points isbetter | Ninjabear (2948) | ||
| 632386 | 2008-01-22 09:25:00 | If you are not spending heaps .. its not a good idea to get points .. or cash back schemes. Go for the free credit card, and immediately you waive the $18+ fee (annually). The debit card from Westpac may not be "entirely" free. For the students accounts, not sure but when I had one from the BNZ Campus Pack.. I had to pay semi annual fee on that. |
