632336 2008-01-21 03:49:00 I'm happy with my 2mbit download speed. Just wish I had faster upload 512kbit up would be nice mejobloggs (264)
632337 2008-01-21 04:38:00 Now both you and i know that will never happen telecom have trouble just supplying a service to the nation with breakdowns all the time so don't expect to much from telescum.

I think our third world electricty network which brakes down a lot, is far more of a concern. Without electricity, we won't have telecommunications. Currently the cook strait cables has problems due to it being too old and not being able to be insured. This means the north island can't get it's peak demand electricity from the south, which could popentially mean blackouts in the future.

Telecommunications do have glitches from time to time. Telecom has such a large customer base that it is always publised when their is a problem, however other ISPs have issues all the time that you never hear about. Even Vodafones mobile network seems to be unreliable at times based on the problems with roaming in Oz, and my own mobile connection when I use it often disconnects me during a call.

632339 2008-01-21 05:26:00 LOL. Having just 1.5Mbit from ADSL I switched back to 256k. Nomad (952)
632340 2008-01-21 09:11:00 Thats insane why do you want slower speeds. Hitech (9024)
632341 2008-01-21 09:47:00 I feel robbed by only getting 1.5Mbit when they advertise 7.6Mbit.
When I had it .. I had to download with download accel .. if I did the usual way its v slow. Maybe I would of gone back to dialup .. but they needed the phoneline free.

I don't do much downloads or play games .. most web surfing.

632342 2008-01-21 15:00:00 I don't see the point in offering 25mbps speeds at probably extreme prices of which only a select few people can afford.

If you read the reports about broadband in the OECD countries you'd probably make the conclusion that we're lagging behind in speeds. The report didn't mention much about our miserable data caps which I think ISP's should focus more on rather than speed.

If you're an everyday home user who doesn't leave Bittorrent on the whole night downloading warez, streaming videos and online gaming would probably be the most bandwidth intensive thing you'd do. A 3.5mbps down/512kb up connection will be more than sufficient for that. You'd most likely share your connection with 2-3 other computers so a 25GB+ data cap would be good.

I have yet to see those kind of plans at affordable prices. The difference in price between 128k and 512k upload is ridiculous too and I don't see any logic behind that.

It's for advertising... 25mbps sounds pretty slick. At the end of the day, fibre/cable will always win speed wise because it's to the home or node and doesn't suffer the problem of electrical resistance.

In New Zealand, bandwidth is expensive! We all know it, this is why the government is rumoured to chip in for another link to oz that will potentially offer [cheaper] international bandwidth.

Telstraclear cable is damn expensive for what it is.

632344 2008-01-21 21:16:00 Telstraclears service maybe expensive but when you think about it there are a myriad of services that run through the same cable such as tv internet voice services data services and more still to come such as HDTV its not cheap to run a service like that. It cost over $200 million for telstraclear to lay cable to 70% of chch and as of yet there are no plans to lay anymore because of the cost. Hitech (9024)
