785461 2009-06-24 21:31:00 I put my old 120gb HD into a Greenstar USB case. Think it cost $70.

785462 2009-06-25 04:38:00 I have several hard drives floating around and I just use one of these

Works great for me - easy to swap drives in and out.

785464 2009-06-25 05:07:00 Doesn't offer any protection though....what if liquid comes in contact? qazwsxokmijn (102)
785465 2009-06-25 05:09:00 Then you're ****ed. :p

That's the downside of them, the are great in the right environment.

785466 2009-06-25 07:18:00 There's a few of those on trade me for 65, around 70 incl. postage.

Was previously going to recommend it, (easy cooling:p) but its a little over your $50 budget.

There's a copycat one for $55 on TM, no brand, so I'd avoid it

785468 2009-06-25 09:54:00 Dont mean to steal the thread (not worth starting a new one!), but what about a fan in an external HDD enclosure?

Iv heard mixed opinions, some saying you MUST have a fan, others saying its not so important.

Would love to hear what you guys think :)

785469 2009-06-25 10:31:00 A fan helps, but if the case has good passive cooling its unneeded really. A hard drive inside a system doesn't require one, just requires a bit of air Blam (54)

Some are made of aluminium so the whole case acts as a heatsink for the drive.

Although I find in a computer case, a fan in front of the drive cage does keep the drive temp down; in one of my computers, the hdd temp is always around 29-35 with a fan in front of the drive. In another computer, there is no fan and the hard drive gets as hot as 65c. When that happens, usually when I'm transferring a lot of large files, the file transfers fail and I have to start them again.
