634359 2008-01-27 05:35:00 how bad are your roads ?

www.kiwirap.org.nz

saw it on the news a few minutes ago.

whats interesting is the results for some of the roads i regularly drive.....

National Ranking, Collective Risk

7 SH1 warkworth to wellsford
9 SH1 owera to warkworth
11 SH1a and SH1 through owera
19 SH16 hellensville to westharbour
20 SH1 marsden point to whangerei
21 SH1 ruakaka to wellsford

mayby that explains why i've nearly been killed a few thousand times ;)

634360 2008-01-27 07:59:00 Depends on what you are comparing them to.

Those roads themselves are fine. It is the inconsiderate, impatient idiots driving on them that are the problem. Drive anywhere in NZ these days even at the speed limit and there is always some moron that wants to pass you.

I have driven millions of kilometers in over 40 countries and NZ roads are great compared to some places i have driven.

If as you say you have "nearly been killed a few thousand times" then maybe it is time you slowed down.

634361 2008-01-27 08:08:00 I just drove back to Auckland today after spending 10 days in sunny New Plymouth. Trip was fine until I passed the drags at Meremere. Bad timing, they must have been finishing (it was around 3.30pm). Two dickheads, one in a hotted-up TX5 and the other in a Subaru Forrester decided to have acceleration races on a busy road - they would drive beside each other at 50km/h (blocking traffic), then when there was a bit of clear space in front of them (500-600 metres), floor it, squeezing past traffic ahead of them at speeds I estimate to be 140-160km/h. :groan: :groan: Wish I'd had a passenger to dial *555 for me!! johcar (6283)
634362 2008-01-27 08:18:00 I had 18 days in the Sth Island over Xmas/New Year. From Christchurch over to Hokitika, down to Wanaka, Queenstown, Te Anau, back up via Cromwell, Tekapo to Christchurch.

Apart from a traffic light on a bridge out of Queenstown and one for road works i don't recall a traffic light for over two weeks, it was fantastic.

A lot less traffic, less unpredictable Asian drivers (as apposed to Howick area) and on average good drivers. Although I normally never exceed the speed limit I did get passed by many every day, so i guess there are still a lot of impatient law breakers out there that might meet their demise sooner than others.

Overall a real pleasure to drive down there compared to city driving.

All you need is ONE other person to verify what you say is correct, submit it to the police and the police follow it up and from past experience the culprits end up with a dangerous or careless driving charge against them.

634364 2008-01-27 08:32:00 I have driven millions of kilometers in over 40 countries and NZ roads are great compared to some places i have driven.I'll say!! I traveled between the Chengyang region in China towards the Longji rice terraces on a public bus on this road that was still under construction. That part of the road was 68 Km long and it took us 4.5 hrs to travel it. The public buses in rural China leave a lot to be desired (eg massive overloading as long as the doors can still close, there is still room onboard!!), but man, could this driver drive. I have no idea how we managed to stay on the road and not break an axle except for his skills and determination to get his passengers through.

Part of the road (www.imagef1.net.nz). The half hidden blue construction truck indicates just how deep the trenches were. :xmouth:

634365 2008-01-27 08:45:00 We got back from a trip round the North Island a week ago. By our estimates in that time we overtook FOUR vehicles - 3 trucks and an elderly lady. We very rarely had more than three cars behind us at any one point and that was in places where it was too dangerous to ease over to the left and let them pass.

The bus isn't the fastest vehicle on the road.

roads fine, not by a long shot . SH1 from auckland to whangerei is fairly crappy really . things like a bumpy corner going into a bridge that can throw a truck! lack of maintenance (to dangerous for police to do a skid test!), ending a passing lane into a sharp corner, painting road markings poorly so it throws traffic on a bad line into a corner (did you notice they repainted the lines the day after that refugee guy died before the tv crews did their doco ??), major intersections that they where to stingy to fix the layout properly the last time, etc etc etc
funny thing is i bet if they where really really bad it wouldn't be that dangerous because its simply forces everyone to crawl and back the traffic up, in which case you can't pass anyone even if you wanted to .

speed isn't alway a factor but certainly poor driving is . had a truck vers camper van this week, another inch or two and it would have been a fatal for sure . mate saw an MX5 he thinks that spun out in the wet on a corner that has claimed many lives . i think the use of a space saver tire at 80km/h in the wet had something to do with it ;) it didn't help that they have painted the lines so instead of a even downhill curve its a sharp downhill curve .
but drivers are crazy, there are very few blind corners that i haven't been past around, been 3 wide more times than i can remember . see a lot of poor decision making ie by the time they have worked out they can pass they have run out of room to do so, or at start of passing lane go left lane then try overtake and change lanes hitting the vehicle passing them .

i'm not sure whats worse, the fact people crash and die so often or the fact that its just normal :(

jen- thats normal for some of the truck drivers around the place ;)

The bus isn't the fastest vehicle on the road . i hope you where not that bus that was freaking out every time a vechile came behind it . the darn idiot nearly ran himself of the road, not to mention the very poor driving by trying to sucker cars into overtaking when there wasn't room . :groan:

glad you made it back and i hope you had a good time :)
i do like courteous drivers

634368 2008-01-27 09:50:00 I drive almost daily on the Helensville/ West Harbour SH 16 so called dangerous road . Its only dangerous because of spoonbill drivers, there is nothing wrong with the road .
You get the tailgaters but I have educated a few by slamming the brakes on my truck and let them bang into the towing arm .
