634172 2008-01-26 10:16:00 Seriously, this day of the leap year has traditionally the day where a woman can propose to a man as opposed to the other way around... yeah, its a bit early to bring this up (like a month or so!), but it came up in conversation at work this week and a question was posed that hasn't yet been answered...

If the woman proposes (and the man accepts), what would be the situation with the engagement ring? Would the woman buy herself one? Would she buy one for the man (but guys tend not to get/wear them!)...

So, anyone have any ideas on what the deal is here?

And yes, I hadn't been working nearly hard enough this week! lol

634173 2008-01-26 10:30:00 If you have to ask whether a girl should buy her own engagement ring, it is much better to ask it here than live. Saves all that hospital time. R2x1 (4628)
634174 2008-01-26 10:55:00 Not sure here. My drama teacher proposed to her husband in a pub. After she got a few drinks in him. Presumably she bought both rings?

Oh, god she's gonna hunt me down and kill me if she ever knows I told anyone.

634177 2008-01-26 17:26:00 Feb 29th is called "Sadie Hawkins" day here...it is in reference to an old Lil' Abner comic strip....although originally it fell on an entirely different day:

Sadie Hawkins was the daughter of one of Dogpatch's earliest settlers, Hekzebiah Hawkins. When she reached the age of 35, still a spinster, her father in desperation called together the eligible bachelors of Dogpatch and declared that day to be Sadie Hawkins Day and that "when ah fires [my gun] all o' yo' kin start a-runnin! When ah fires agin - after givin' yo' a fair start - Sadie starts a runnin'. Th' one she ketches'll be her husband."

The town spinsters decided that this was such a good idea, they made Sadie Hawkins Day an annual event, much to the chagrin of Dogpatch bachelors everywhere. (See leap year for discussion of a similar tradition of "allowing" women to propose marriage on February 29.)

Sadie Hawkins Day was first mentioned in the November 13, 1937 Li'l Abner strip with the race actually taking place between the November 19th and November 30th strips. It would prove to be an annual event in the strip.[1]

I thought so too prior to my previous marriage. The previous one was a non-event... only happened cos we thought it best for the child. My current soon-to-be-ex missus and I agreed to marry, and again I thought she was the one. But naturally it ain't gonna happen - I can't afford to have too many lonely ladies commit suicide on my behalf. (well that's my excuse!)
