| 633670 | 2008-01-24 21:07:00 | Everything Is Made of Chemicals. Time for another contraversial subject which will bring the naysayers and trendies out to protest vehemently and heap scorn and derision on the subject and the perpetrator of this thread. The word "chemical" has a bad reputation. Yet, everything is made of chemicals. Water, which as we all know, is made of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen and is a chemical. Petrol, which is made of hydrogen and oxygen, with carbon added, is a chemical. It must be matter, energy, space, or time. Nothing else exists. If it is matter, it is made of chemicals. Chemicals are the building blocks of the universe. Water is a chemical. You, the trees, the grass - in fact everything in nature is made of chemicals - a word that is so misused by many people today. Everything we do, from digesting our food to growing organic - or any other type of - food, involves chemicals. Everything is made of chemicals. The reality is that, despite some fears that our children are "pumped full of chemicals" everything is made of chemicals, the proteins, hormones and genetic materials in our cells. And although some are worried about the "cocktails" of chemicals we are exposed to, a potent brew of complex chemicals (all natural) is present in the humble cup of tea — which contains healthy polyphenols. Many people complain about chemicals, pesticides and sometimes fertilisers. However, correct and proper pesticide and fertiliser use saves wildlife habitat. In a world with an increasing population, more food and fibre is not only needed, it is demanded. Also be careful how you use the word, "natural." There are many natural chemicals (only man-made chemicals are not natural) that are toxic. Do you like rhubarb? But you do know not to eat the leaves as they contain poisonous substances called oxalic acid, a corrosive and nephrotoxic acid that is present in many plants. So please be careful how you use that word. Add the word "nasty" or "harmful" before the word, or use the word "toxins" which may describe harmful chemicals. |

One thing that gets me about 'herbal supplements' is that people think that 'because it's natural it's not harmful', but many, many natural things are harmful, eg; opium, marijuana, and many other things. Usually it's the placebo effect anyway. www.badscience.net has more info on that sort of thing. | ubergeek85 (131) | ||
| 633672 | 2008-01-24 21:34:00 | Yep the word chemical has got to be a dirty word. Just like gay used be a nice girls name now its a name for homos. I suppose tobacco is a natural herbal product but it kills you. A lot of herbal products may be doing more harm than good. Unless its been properly tested by people in white coats using the approved tests at best it just dosent do anything at worst its taking you out. C1 |

They too are natural . . and I bet organic too . "Organic" here in the US has been transliterated to mean grown without any preservatives, pesticides or fertilizers . That couldn't be further from the truth unless it was a presidential campaign promise . "Organic" means : "containing at least one naturally occurring carbon atom" . Welcome to the world of biophysics, carbon-units! ("V-ger" from one of the Star Trek movies said that) . Here's my input: I believe that matter is energy . . . just slowed 'way down . |
