633541 2008-01-24 11:20:00 Racking me gray matter about how to upgrade a mate's com that's housing a hookey XP Pro OS, to an Alladin's cave with a Kosher XP Home OS(replete with SP2 thrown in later for good measure)per the hologrammed medium that I have;1x MS-XP Home+SP1,OS CD, when the License Beast rears its ugly head. Now, let me get this right,,,,I buy a MS OS,retail, load it into my computer and should I wish to load it to another computer that I have that I have to PAY MS again?& again........
Ok,so I'm loading said OS to a mates com, what if it were my nth computer?I have to pay to load to each of them??How does MS know that the OS is going onto a mate's com??
MS don't own my com/s! Nor do I think that they own the OS once I've bought it off them.
What' the score if I buy a 2nd hand computer, has the seller of the computer breached copyright laws in selling the computer or the MS OS inside of it;am I guilty of receiving stolen property, even though both parties bought & sold the goods,um,legitimately?

Hell, it's like the copyright laws that apply to music cd's/dvd's etc.Buy it & you have bought an expensive piece of plastic with a thin sliver of foil sandwiched inside of it upon which is imprinted the goods that enjoy. But the copyright laws state that it is illegal to share/copy for resale/or sell the item, along with much other prohibitions on the law of copyright, like playing dvds to the populace of a prison, says that's illegal yet it's done.(never been an inmate but I have it 2nd hand that it's done in there).
Music albums, cassettes,DVD's,VHS movies ,blah blah,,,,all readily available in Charity shops, recycle centres,boot-sales,not to forget the plethora or stores that buy & resell these items,Legally.
I sold my entire record collection(673) albums to the highest bidders(shops) in London,U.K before I returned to N.Z
Having just turned Queens Evidence on myself I better Halte Klapper. eh...besides,Press F1 isn't a Forum for Legal matters.

Perhaps I'll talk mate into buying a 2nd com with a kosher OS installed,,,,,,or ....sell them mine....& leap ahead with my Gigabyte beast project............
Tiptoe,through the tulips.....>>>>>

Retail is different, you can keep it and install onto another PC after you have ditched the first.

OEM means the O/S stays with that PC, regardless of whether its sold or dumped.

And it might be news to you but if you bothered to read the EULA you would see that you DON'T own the O/S, MS does and you have bought a certain usage only of it.

You could say you rent it.
