786558 2009-06-28 08:14:00 OK, I'm trying to open a .docx file, and it says "Word cannot open the Document: user does not have access privileges".
This is odd, because I created the file, and I'm trying to open it on the same machine. So, I try opening a ppt, and the same thing happens. I open Sibelius, and try open a file: Same problem. MyOrgan? Same problem!
I've tried restarting, and shutting down then booting after a while.
I'm running XP, btw

Also, 9/10 times when I start the computer, it says DISK BOOT ERROR, but I just keep rebooting and eventually XP will boot

Help Me, Please!

786560 2009-06-28 08:25:00 From the experts-exchange site. Dont know if it'll come up if I give a link

Is the user a local admin?

If you login as the administrator can you open these files?

And is this on a domain?

If so, then login as administrator and got to the users My Documents folder, right click it and go to properties. Then security and click advanced. You will see a tab labeled owner, change the ower to the user, and check the box that says make changes to all files and sub folders, then apply.

This will give the user access to all the files. Most likely the old user is the current owner of the files.

Did you copy this document (or the folder it was in) from another PC to the computer youre on?

786561 2009-06-28 08:30:00 I'm an admin on the machine, the files are located in My Documents, they've all been created, and saved into the folders they are in now, not copied/pasted. I'm the owner of the files, but I still can't open them. Bagnew (15048)
786562 2009-06-28 08:32:00 Well try what I posted. See if it works Speedy Gonzales (78)
786563 2009-06-28 08:33:00 The "change user to owner"?
I already did.

786564 2009-06-28 08:37:00 Have you scanned the hdd for malware / viruses? Sounds like something is stuffed, or maybe corrupt Speedy Gonzales (78)
786565 2009-06-28 08:39:00 When I do a scan in NOD32, for almost everything it says "ACCESS DENIED" or something like that. I'll scan with CHKDSK, like Tunez suggested? Bagnew (15048)
786566 2009-06-28 08:44:00 Won't hurt and its probably a disk problem from what I can assume. Tuneznz (13203)
786567 2009-06-28 08:46:00 Run>cmd>chkdsk C: /f

Once that is done, in command prompt type sfc /scannow and hit enter

If it prompts you for the XP cd, insert it.

Next, right click My Computer>Properties>System Restore tab>tick "disable system restore on all drives". Click OK

Tap F8 on boot and select "Safe Mode with Networking"

At the login screen, select Administrator

IF it isn't there, Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice then type in Administrator for the username and nothing for the password.

Hopefully the files below will open now, in Administrator

Then download MBAM form this link:
www.malwarebytes.org

Update it, then perform a full scan.

Next, download Spyware Terminator:
dnl.spywareterminator.com

Update, and perform a full scan. Do not install the crawler toolbar or ClamAV component during installation.

Once you have scanned with both applications, save HijackThis (www.trendsecure.com) to your computer then run it.

Select Perform System Scan and save a logfile at the HijackThis's main menu.

When the scan is finished, a log should pop up. Copy everything there and paste it here for further analysis.

Cheers
