| 786436 | 2009-06-28 00:12:00 | Hi there all, I am looking for a printer for a relative who's old bubble jet has recently given out. The problem is of course the operating system. It seems that less and less manufacturers are making hardware that is compatible with Windows 98. Got to be assumed I guess, it is over ten years old. However it seems we have just missed out. They bought an epson colour 480 last year from Harvey Normans, but returned it because it "wouldn't work." In reality it needed drivers downloaded from the internet, but was beyond them. So they returned it. HN no longer stocks these printers, and could not recommend an alternative. My question is can anyone recommend a source for a printer that would fit the bill? Cheers |

Have a look at Paradigm (I use them fairly frequently, www.pp.co.nz www.pp.co.nz Or Ascent, they list a number, for example: www.ascent.co.nz Edit: I meant to add they may well just have to learn how to download drivers, no matter what printer they get, else get the vendoe to do it for them. |

| 786440 | 2009-06-28 01:40:00 | If needed, buy a PCI to USB 2.00 card from Dick Smiths. I have used Canon models with no problems - drivers come with them. Using Pixma ip 1600 at the moment with 98se | Peter H (220) | ||

There was limited support for usb in Win98, same as Win95B, but there were problems. Edit: Peters suggestion is the best, if they have Win98SE, because there wont be any parallel port printers around (or most likely not). I think if they do indeed have Win98, then it would be time for them to upgrade the PC and OS. |

| 786443 | 2009-06-28 02:22:00 | Paradigm say this Ricoh printer has drivers for: Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP, though since it only has a USB connection, I'd take that with a grain of salt, there would be no guarantee it would actually work with 95B, or even 98. So just need to install a PCI USB card (hopefully) :) www.pp.co.nz |

| 786444 | 2009-06-28 02:45:00 | EPSON LX300+ 9-pin Dot Matrix Printer is listed by Dick Smith and several others. Interface is parallel Centronics and Epson site shows drivers for Windows 98 as well as Windows 3.1 (anyone here old enough to remember!) Not suitable for photographs but it would be ok for letters etc. Or Epson C43SX for colour inkjet. |

| 786445 | 2009-06-28 02:59:00 | Thanks for the quick responses everyone. It is 98SE, so no problem with USB. Will have a look through those printers now. For the amount the computer is used, it will not be worth upgrading. Thanks for the quick replies. |
