633605 2008-01-26 04:23:00 What were the real sentences, including parole? Maybe the judge added a bit to make sure they got 2 - 3.5.

Well, an earlier release and then some kind of supervision (which is what parole is) makes a lot more sense than just releasing an offender into the community after their whole sentence - but with no supervision.

After all, among other things, they are in jail for their failure to live according to community standards. With parole the offender's entry back into the community is monitored to a greater or lesser extent.

633606 2008-01-26 07:07:00 Why do the poor commit more crime?

"It's not that crime is rational; it's that working within the system is insufficiently rational if the system is working against you.

If you are born white, middle-class, in an educated family, you are likely to have
(a) the message, from your culture, your neighborhood, your family, that if you work hard and stay on the straight and narrow you are likely to wind up at least moderately successful
(b) evidence to back that up, because many of the people around you have worked hard, stayed on the straight and narrow, and wound up moderately successful.

If you are born into intergenerational, cultural poverty, the message you're going to get is: it doesn't matter. You can work all you can and it won't make a difference. Or you have to work three times as hard as the other guy for it to make a difference. It's a sucker's game, why play? And you're going to get evidence to back that up, because even if we argue that now everyone has equal opportunities (which is in itself dubious), even a generation ago that certainly wasn't true. And that's what you'll hear (even if it's never said) from people who are older: don't try to work within the system, because it won't work."

You are now starting to see the results of twenty years of Economic mis-management in New Zealand copying the "American Way", this was all predicted at the time of the moving away from Socialist values, you have no one to blame but yourselves for the increase in crime in this country.

Suck It Up, the results of short sighted greed and incredible ignorance.

What country do you lve in?

It can't be NZ, either that or you haven't ventured out into the real world in the last decade.

The minoritys that you speak of have near unlimited resourses put their way, from the moment they are born right through their entire lives. If they cant be bothered to work then they get fed, clothed, hosed by the taxpayer.

If they do want to work they can get access to world class education, training, JOBS.

And its business that pay for a lot of it.

End of the day, some people are shelf stakers.

Others just won't apply themselkves to even the most basic work.

From what I can see, holding their hands and bending over backwards has just earned more of their spite. And people like yourself want to see more of it?

633607 2008-01-26 10:01:00 Rape carries a maximum sentence of 14 years-
Judge in pre-sentencing says" This is the worst crime of this nature I have come across in 15 years on the bench"
Judge then hands down sentence of 7 years.
Question - How bad does the offence have to be to draw the maximum?
Nonsense - No, remarks like this from judges are too common

seen that before too many times..........many judges are IDIOTS........

saw one the other day where a fellow got caught with child porn on their pc and pictures they'd printed off of very young kids getting raped or similar.......the judge said 'this offending is the lower end of the scale' and fined em $3000.....far as I'm concerned that's BULL****.....theres no such thing as 'low end' when it comes to that kinda crime.....i believe FIRMLY, that anyone caught with child porn should be sentenced as if they'd commited the crimes portrayed in the pictures they've got

thus; if you got caught with pics of kids being raped you get sentenced for child rape ! ........as things stand these days the sentences are ridiculously light

633609 2008-01-26 18:56:00 Do not forget that the Politicians (with the help of civil servants make laws), the Police enforce laws when the law is properly drafted, the courts deal out the punishment/sentence for breaking the law.

In a court you will have a prosecution and a defence.

If you are are witness to the alledged offence you swear on the bible or other means to, "Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

The lawyers do their best to ensure a witness does not get to tell the WHOLE truth. This, as in yes or no answers with no elaboration.

There have been enough mistakes made in the past to ensure I would not vote to bring in a death penalty. Now I do not know who is guilty or innocent.

Arthur Allan Thomas went through this sort of procedure. He was finally pardoned and received a pay out. This did not make him innocent but there was certainly some doubt in my mind at the time. I was not on the Jury BTW.

Is Scott Watson guilty or David Bain for that matter?

So the death penalty takes the life of a convicted person then later it is found that there is new evidence.

Too late now isn't it? Currently we do not have a method of reversing death. It is quite final.
