| 634647 | 2008-01-28 21:30:00 | We watch movies like: "Quigley, Down Under" and "The Earthling" and TV shows like "Rising Damp" and "Fawlty Towers" and Monty-Anything" just to hear the accents . I do understand what you mean . Some years back my family and I were waiting in a queue in Disneyland, talking among ourselves, when a group of girls asked us what part of England we were from . After we explained our origins they replied with, "Don't stop talking . We love your accents . " But they also noticed that, although my wife seemed to have a similar accent, they realised it was not the same and wondered if she came from a different part of NZ . They were somewhat bemused to find that although she called herself a NZer her accent was quite different . We then had to explain Northern Ireland (and where it was) to these delightful girls when they had only a vague idea of where England was . We had even less success explaining where NZ was . |

It is either the Sydney Harbour bridge or the Auckland Harbour Bridge. I forget which. I will have to brush up my telepathic or psychic skills in the future unless I get Alzheimers in which case I will forget to upskill myself. |

| 634651 | 2008-01-29 07:04:00 | I had a job in a shop in Brea, California, and one day I heard a little lady with a very strong accent . She was paying her bill and I stood beside her as the boss eyed my suspiciously . . . and then I asked her "Shropshire"? She looked at me with her eyes getting wider and wider . . her lips pursed and she made the sign of the cross and told me that she was one of only a few hundred people who lived in Shropshire and she was flabbergasted how I could guess . I told her I was a student of dialects . She walked away talking to herself . Shropshire was the only city I could think of at the moment in England . . . and I just said it to start a conversation . . . not having ANY idea it was where she was from . I'm not even sure to this day if I spelled the city correctly, pronounced it well, where it really is, or if it still exists . My boss gave me a wide berth from that day . . he didn't know what to expect from me next . . . maybe walking on water . |
