633680 2008-01-25 00:25:00 Everything Is Made of Chemicals .

Time for another contraversial subject which will bring the naysayers and trendies out to protest vehemently and heap scorn and derision on the subject and the perpetrator of this thread .

Wait . . what about photons?

and x-rays?

and gamma rays?

and gravity?

and wind?

I bet you cannot find THEM on the periodic chart . . . but I bet they are part of "everything" right?

633681 2008-01-25 01:01:00 When I was recently in Australia I saw this burger chain called Burger Edge who advertised "Chemical-Free Chicken"...

See www.burgeredge.com

So I asked to speak with the owner and asked him about his chemical free chicken. I said

:groan: "Chemical-free chicken... that's overstating it a bit isn't it? I mean what's left when you remove the chemicals?"

:D "We don't have any chemicals in our chickens. 100% organic free roaming chickens."

:groan: "But you know water is a chemical right? So do you mean that you sell really dry chicken?"

:D "Uhhh"

:groan: "I'll have a vege burger"

Everything is composed of neutrons, protons, electrons and etc. All of which form compounds in various combinations.

I am not sure what your point is here.

Is this another stirring thread? If so then go away and sit next to a block of Uranium 235 or take a drink of Cl.

633683 2008-01-25 01:50:00 And then there's the old di-hydride monoxide scam. Endless fun.

I want di hydride monoxide banned unless its used in making beer lol.

Curiously enough, Sweep, you seem to be on your own on that point . All other respondents seem to know what's going on by the tone of their replies . :groan:

To continue:

I object to organically grown food being touted as “natural .

To grow a plant “naturally” you need to unnaturally till the soil, unnaturally plant the seed, unnaturally tend the plant by unnaturally watering and unnaturally weeding and generally unnaturally looking after the plant until you unnaturally harvest it .

The only “natural” that springs to mind are the daises and all the other weeds, but because, in most cases, they abound in unnaturally occurring environments, (we ploughed the land at some time) so I’m not so certain . "Natural" dandelion tea, anyone?

633685 2008-01-25 02:05:00 Its the same with Bacteria - people think it means bad germs straight away.

Stay away from yoghurt then!

Yeah, the word "natural" seems like an outdated hangover from the past idea that humans were special, cherished and outside of nature. It doesn't really make sense to those who see blurry lines between humans and other species, or indeed human civilisations and the greater outside world.

You forgot unnaturally changing the plant in the first place to emphasise the characteristics people want in it.

Anyone ever seen "wild" corn?

633688 2008-01-25 20:32:00 I tried some corn based moonshine once that was pretty wild.
"Naturally" I tried some more.

And what about www.wildflowers.com ? There have been "wildflowers" planted on the west side of the southwestern motorway in Auckland (and other places) and they placed a sign saying they planted the "wildflowers." Looked very nice when the "wildflowers" were blooming but afterwards weeds grew in their place which were more wildflowers than that which was planted originally. Unfortunately there are enough gullible people out there who do not take the time to ask themselves, "Wildflowers?":groan:
