635195 2008-01-29 22:42:00 Just wondering on what our younger members think of Lady Helen's idea of raising the leaving age to 18.

Seems to me a waste of time. Those who want higher education are already staying. Those who don't and are already truanting or bypassing the system will continue to do the same. Just more people for the truancy officer to chase.

IMO far too many are staying on in school and getting qualifications they will never use.

There will always be a demand for unskilled workers and labourers. Xtra years of education are not necessary.

635196 2008-01-29 22:45:00 It's a load or crap.

I like John Key's idea of sending all the useless bastards off to boot camp. Make em join the army or something, learn some discipline. Go fight in Iraq or somewhere, take their anger out in a useful way. And if they die, the country will be a better place without the lazy buggers.

635197 2008-01-29 22:47:00 Some people, like myself, simply don't/won't need to stay at school that long. After level 1 (or 2, haven't decided yet) I'm off to polytech / starting an apprenticeship and no one's gonna stop me :)

And not everyone that leaves school at a young(er) age turns out to be a bum (or however you want to describe them)

A lot of jobs don't require top notch education.

635198 2008-01-29 22:54:00 I agree with JJJJ and WolfForest22

There is no point in forcing some kids to be at school.

But I do think they should stop all the truanting so that kids get a basic education. Read and Write and basic maths

And I do think that teachers that let kids come out of school that can only grunt should be sacked.

And I do think that not every body should be on a course, we do need laborurers etc

But I say that if you are not working or any a course etc then NO DOLE. There are plenty of jobs around the country (dairying etc).

And when I read my local paper crime pages just about every crime is committed by someone who is unemployed !

635199 2008-01-29 23:04:00 Make kids stay in school until they have a job to go to. ie: Don't just let them leave in 5th form and go on the dole. Or they could leave and go to an apprentice scheme. School isn't for everyone. A boot camp thing wouldn't be too bad for truants/hutt valley high students Thebananamonkey (7741)
635200 2008-01-29 23:17:00 Making kids stay in school until they are 18 is a complete waste of time. If they want to be there they will stay there and if they don't then they will either bunk school at every opportunity or sit there wasting everyone's time. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

Quite a few kids leave school as soon as they can then after a year or two decide what they really want to do and go back to get their qualifications. Sometimes they need a taste of life outside of school before they discover what it is they want to do for a job/career.

Leave it as it is and don't let them have the dole until they are 18. That way they will either have to continue with their education or get a job.

635201 2008-01-29 23:24:00 I left at the end of 4th form.

Young guy at the local school here wants to be a cop.
He was given a choice of options for this year: Art or I forget what its called, some agricultural thing.

There was also IT but they said he couldn't take it. His mum got them to allow him to take it instead of the other two.

None of them are of any use. The IT at that school consists of MS Office skills.
Word, Excel, PP, IE, OE.

Which he can do in his sleep already.

So what use is more school in a lot of cases?

635202 2008-01-29 23:34:00 Cops need to have ok maths skills. Get the kid to do the online test, www.newcops.co.nz and if he can do it then sweet. But they tend not to accept people into the police until they're in their mid twenties. IT was like that at my school too. Maybe he should do courses he likes by correspondence? There's sure to be a good IT course there.
But if you know what you're going to do, and it's not academic, then schools a waste of time. If it's academic, or you're just a fence sitter, probably best to stay put.

635204 2008-01-30 00:04:00 The way NCEA is you probably could have gone out the back of the school and spent a half hour picking up rubbish and gained a few more credits that way.

Way past time NZ caught up with the rest of the world in education.

Loosers are identified at Primary school and rarely improve at Intermediate or High school so let them leave. Less money we have to pump into schools to keep them there. No DOLE though, let them work how to make money.
