786166 2009-06-27 01:25:00 Following on from the reinstallation of W2K and Firefox plus all my other programs, I need to restore my Bookmarks as I had a large number of reference sites for my work.

I tried the FF restore but it only finds the few bookmarks I have added since the re-installation, however a quick scan through my C drive using Ztree found the current list intact in C:\documents and settings\business\favourites.

In the meantime I have made a desktop shortcut to this file and can select and open any of the sites almost as easily as using the original list in FF, but is it possible to link FF to this list, which I am assuming (perhaps naively) is the list imported from IE in the first instance and added to by FF since?

The alternative is to rebuild the FF bookmarks by opening each site in turn and bookmarking it again, which would be a rather tedious process and I'd rather get back to earning a living before I have to sell my kids to white slave traders.

Ever the optimist....

Cheers

786167 2009-06-27 01:35:00 Is it an HTML file?

If it is, in FF go Bookmarks>Organise Bookmarks>Import and Backup>Import HTML

It is not a single HTML file, it is a series of folders, each holding an internet shortcut . I just browsed to it via 'import HTML' and FF wanted a file name, not a folder .

Appears that it can't import from that . Unless anybody else has a good idea it looks like I'll have to rebuild manually, site by site . At least I still have them all .

786169 2009-06-27 03:40:00 Hi Billy

Had this issue a few years ago when I moved from Opera to Firefox. Not exactly the same problem but I'd guess a solution is out there.

In my case I found a free site where I uploaded all the hundreds of Opera bookmarks, they were converted to FF, then downloaded in a new file which I think I then imported = voila!

So maybe try Xmarks, uploading the unconnected file, and see if they then synchronise with your FF installation.

And of course, Google is always your friend..

786171 2009-06-27 06:20:00 Well, I got all my bookmarks back again!

I used ZTree to do a search of my C drive for 'bookmarks' and in seconds it turned up a folder called qfgmr08v . default which I peeked inside and found a file called bookmarks . bak plus another called bookmarks . html . I looked inside the latter and found a swag of bookmarks so I imported the file into FF and there they all were . This after a full reinstall that wiped all my other programs off the face of the planet .

You just gotta love that ZTree (and its extinct 16bit forebear XTree) . It has dug me out of so many holes over the years and there is literally nothing faster for finding a lost file, or even a fragment of a lost file . I have never even begun to plumb the depth of its range of functions but the little I do understand is magical in its capabilities . You just have to be happy with command line stuff . There is a Windows version, ZtreeWin but I've always stuck with what I know and trust .

Cheers

786172 2009-06-27 08:17:00 Once you've got it sorted, give Xmarks a go. I use it & it keeps my firefox bookmarks synhcronised on all the computers I use. It's just another way of backing up without having to remember :) Phil B (648)

Thanks Phil. I did a Google search on Xmarks earlier after Winston's post and got a lot of hits. I then spent some time looking through them, but even the most promising one was quite opaque in its information and explanations so I gave it a miss.

Rightly or wrongly, I tend to associate the clarity of instructions with the quality of the product (not just for software) and if it makes me work too hard just to get an idea of what it's about I'm inclined to flag it. I fell back to a program I know and trust and produced a result very quickly

A link direct to the Xmarks program information would be helpful.

Cheers

Weave is a much better solution IMHO..

786175 2009-06-27 09:14:00 It's an addon for firefox. Go to addons, search for Xmarks & install it, follow the prompts to create an account. After you've got the bookmarks as you want them in firefox, just synchronise & discard the bookmarks on the server. Then from that point on every bookmark you add to firefox will be synchronised with the server. Next time you do an install or you want the bookmarks on another computer etc, synchronise again, but this time discard those on the computer ( if they're default bookmarks installed with a browser they're useless anyway) & your fully updated bookmarks will be installed in firefox. Every bookmark added to either browser will be added to the other browser as soon as it goes online Phil B (648)
