787544 2009-06-30 13:12:00 everythings mad cheap compared to the days when I paid $2000 for a celeron 433.. I want to know if now is a good time to buy a new system (custom build I guess) or can we expect price drops any time soon?

These are some parts I scrambled together from pricespy......

ASRock G43Twins-FullHD Intel G43 Motherboard mATX $124.21

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 3.00GHz OEM $298.99

AcBel iPower 510W intelligent 20pin and 24pin Black Retail 12cm Fan Power Supply $110.25

Western Digital 640GB SATA 7200rpm hard drive $108.37

Corsair 4GB PC6400 DDR2 RAM 2x240-pin DIMMs Non ECC Unbuffered TWIN2X4096-6400C5 2x XMS2 2GB 800MHz $93.13

ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB graphics card $264.38

Cooler Master Elite 333 with no PSU $88.21

TOTAL $1,087.54

I'm told to stay away from 'OEM' for the cpu but i'll have another look later..

So lads what do we think? I'm aiming to have a system capable of playing any games and bluray movies I fancy without burning a hole in my wallet.

787545 2009-06-30 19:47:00 Nothing wrong with OEM just don't expect any support but it still has a guarantee, I don't see prices getting much lower they are already right down, but then who really knows what the markets will do gary67 (56)
787546 2009-06-30 21:28:00 Make sure that the OEM CPU comes with a retail fan.

Personally I would get an Asus or Gigabyte motherboard, better quality IMO.

And an Antec, Corsair or Enermax PSU. AcBel is not the best of quality.

I also suggest your U/G your motherboard to one that supports crossfire, so if you ever decide that one 4870 is not enough power, you can add on in.

What brand 4870 are you getting? I recommend Asus and Gigabyte. Stay away from Sapphire if possible.

+1 - Exactly what he said. :)

I've had a few bad experiences with AcBel PSUs...not the best by a long shot. I'd also add silverstone to the list of decent PSUs.

I don't know, I think the price pretty much stays the same, it's just that you get the latest HW for your money each time.

Which by the time you do it again, looks sad.........

I would stick to ASUS or Gigabyte for a motherboard and Enermax, Corsair or Antec for PSU.

And be careful with Pricespy, the cheapest shops are not the best. They often have no after sales service at all, so forget about your warranty - and they quite often disappear completely, like C1 lately.

Computer Lounge, Ascent or Playtech are 3 of the trustworthy places listed on Pricespy. You may pay a bit more, but wouldn't you prefer to sure?

787551 2009-06-30 23:25:00 If you are building it yourself, seriously consider getting everything from
the one retailer. It will make things alot easier if it all has a strange fault:
(take the whole lot back to them).

Check the warranty.
Many retailers wont give the full 3-5 year manufacturer warranty on parts (some parts)
I'd personally avoid Antec PSU's & go with Corsair(Silverstone) or Enermax.

787552 2009-06-30 23:43:00 You forgot to add the 24" 1080p monitor for the best gaming experience

and +1 on PCTek, the cheapest on pricespy generally have no stock also

787553 2009-07-01 00:04:00 I would recommend you stay away from AsRock. the return rate on those are quite nasty...

Also cheapest may be short term gain, but long term it may be painful if things break down and you need to get RMA. choose your dealer carefully.
