2009-06-29 16:52:00 Hello, i'm kind of a noob when it comes to Macs and i just picked up a Mac G3 B&W and i thought i'd install Ubuntu 9.04 on it. Could someone explain to me how to install Linux on my Mac? LarsJohann (13010)

2009-06-29 23:05:00 Ok everytime i try and run the Desktop CD for PowerPC on my Mac G3, the screen goes white for a few seconds and then i get random purple and colorful static. Anybody know what's up? LarsJohann (13010)
2009-06-29 23:53:00 At which point in the startup process does this occur? Erayd (23)
2009-06-30 00:27:00 I insert the CD into the drive, i boot up the Mac while holding C then a prompt comes up asking me to either write "live" and a couple other options if i press the tab key. I've tried every option but let's say i type "live" and press enter, the screen goes white for a couple seconds then there is random purple and colorful static on my screen. I havent left it to see what it does because i'm afraid it may harm my pc. LarsJohann (13010)
2009-06-30 00:51:00 Try forcing a graphics mode - what you're describing sounds like the system is trying to display something in a mode that your monitor doesn't support. It's rare, but it does happen sometimes. Generally what you should see at that point is text followed by a progress bar, or all text.

The various modes and how to specify them should be in the help pages of the bootloader (usually accessed by pressing various function keys). If you're not sure which one you need, go for the lowest one. Note that this is not the same as 'safe graphics mode' / 'vga mode' - while specifying that as well won't hurt, it applies to a later point in the boot process.

2009-06-30 02:15:00 Ok thanks alot, i'll try it out. Would you know the specific command to force graphics mode? And also, it's odd your saying my monitor seems that it isnt compatible because i ran this on my PC running Windows and it handled it just fine. You think it's because its a Mac? LarsJohann (13010)
2009-06-30 03:55:00 You will sometimes get this when it switches from text mode to graphics mode. Just let it run unless it makes a noise. mikebartnz (21)
