786984 2009-06-29 08:23:00 I brought one a week or so ago, its doing everything it should but I was wondering what the deal is with firmware.

Its the linux model or whatever its called which AFAIK means I can upload other firmware versions to it and edit them etc

What I want to know is why would I? Like is there anything to be gained out of it or would I just be risking breaking it

You can throw something like DD-WRT, OpenWRT, Tomato, or similar 3rd party firmware packages on it if you want . The real question is, will you gain anything? If you're happy with the functionality offered by the standard Linksys firmware, there really isn't much point "upgrading" .

On the other hand, these 3rd party firmware packages do offer a lot of interesting functionality - but it's only useful if you can actually put it to good use .

786986 2009-06-29 08:35:00 Gives it functions of a $600 router.

Eg: Advanced QOS, Access restrictions, Enables new wireless features such as WDS and wireless client modes, Raises the limits on maximum connections for P2P, allows you to run your custom scripts or telnet/ssh in and do all sorts of things like re-program the SES/AOSS button, adds wireless site survey to see your wifi neighbors, and lots of other stuff...

786988 2009-06-29 08:39:00 Yes. You'll need to do the port forwards all all of course. Blam (54)
