Having done that, could you you post a few notes on how to invent a wheel?

Alfred would be proud of you RX, but don't be inane. Show me another post in that thread that covered the basics of grounding in conjunction with charge equalisation and you'll be qualified to invent the wheel without my help.

When giving advice on a subject as fraught with risk as prevention of static damage to sensitive electronics you should make sure you get it right. I deal with static measurement, prevention and control professionally and in my opinion the advice given was lacking and your effort as quoted below shows your lack of understanding.

It is absolutely irrelevant to the anti-static precautions whether you or the computer are earthed.. It is only important that you and the computer frame are at the same potential.

Your opinion may differ, but I couldn't care less.

Cheers

When told off, it is important to consider the source, and keep the salt handy.

(Anyway, my neighbour has a friend that used to have a big dog.)

636869 2008-02-04 02:01:00 ...It can be easier and more reliable if you use a printer lead or other external port lead with a metal shell as an extension for the clip point so that you don't disturb the ground clip while working on the laptop...

I've yet to see a serial cable in which the metal housings are connected. In the days when they were designed there was a lot of concern about earth loops. RS-232 does have provision for a "safety earth" conductor (pin 1 in a 25 pin DB connector) but it was very rarely used. and the connectors have no means of connecting to the housing.

Two USB cables I've just put a meter on have got the metal shells of the two plugs connected, but not to any of the wires, so it's through the shield. The only printer cable I could find quickly is similar, which surprised me. (I remember printer cables with a flying lead from the cable screen at one end on mini systems.)

So a USB cable would be a good place to find a chassis earth. A printer cable might be. A serial cable is a very bad bet, and very difficult to clip to. ;)
