636845 2008-02-03 07:19:00 1) What's the difference between "the earth" and "the floor"? (Shush Mercury)
2) How do I equate the potential of myself and the laptop?
3) Does it matter if the laptop has static charge? As long as I do not transfer additional charges to the laptop, I shouldn't be concerned?

636846 2008-02-03 07:23:00 The Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is the largest of the terrestrial planets in the Solar System, in both diameter and mass. It is also referred to as the Earth, Planet Earth, and the World, and in some contexts, Gaia and Terra.

The Floor is generally the lower horizontal surface of a room, and/or the supporting structure underneath it. It also commonly refers to flooring, or a wall-to-wall floor covering, which forms the decorative surface of the floor.

Hope that helps.

Just a quick question, how much does it cost to send a letter from earth to mercury? I wanna send some blackmail to someone I know up there.

Sorry Mercury, there's another academic answer in there. Whether from ignorance or laziness, they keep talking about "grounding" and "earthing".
There is no valid engineering reason to compulsorily involve a ground at all. The device and the repairer should be "bonded" together with a conducting path, preferably one with a resistance of a few megohms to ensure personal comfort and safety.

Unless your religion or horoscope dictates otherwise, don't bother with an earth. Standing on the roof can tend to make you look foolish, and listening to priests and astrologers on electrical matters doesn't always enhance your image either. The one time you need to mention earthing or grounding is when you are sitting an exam. Examiners accept it, since it is not their laptop going phut.

Bonding is good. Grounding is for when you have been bad. ;)
