I swerve. If possible.

I have killed a kitten, a sparrow, and a hedgehog.

And it bothers me for ages and ages after.

Swerving towards them is an a******* thing to do.

636629 2008-02-03 22:06:00 What size was the "large fluffy cat"? Given that you were perhaps driving in mountainous country and the said fluffy cat could possibly have been bigger than the kind that fits on one's lap, could it have done similar damage to your vehicle if you had run over it?

If I can trust my Metric-to-Real-Units converter, then it was about 1.36kg...pretty large for a cat..but it was a common feline..not the mountain-type.

I guess it all depends on the hardness (Rockwell Scale)..like if it was a "C" or a "B" value..of the cat's head. The actual skeleton would not have done much damage.

The California Golden Eagle was indeed in the US..hence the "California" designation on it's name.

636630 2008-02-03 22:35:00 Which country was this in? If it was New Zealand he was obviously lieing as there're no hawks here in NZ.

(ps - just being pedantic here - we have harriers and falcons, but as said, no hawks).

Well I will be !@#$%^ I always thought they were called hawks as well
Just goes to show how stupid I am.

I try very hard to hit rabbits, possums and 'wild' :p cats. Have killed 10+ rabbits and 5+ possums and a few 'wild' cats in the 1 year I've had my new car. Have to say the front bumper is looking a bit worse for the wear though. Pity, but worth it.

If there was any oncoming traffic or anything like that I'd just keep driving straight on, seeing something pop up in front of me doesn't give me a fright at all, having driven in the country at night for many hours has made me immune to that. :D You get all kinds of interesting things on the road at night around here, cats, dogs, possums, rabbits, sheep, llamas, pigs, even the occasional little kid.

Not that my reactions are slow. Just the other day I did a handbrake 180 degree turn at 50kph to avoid a kid who ran out onto the road. Scared the living sh*t out of him, I thought it was quite a laugh, as no one got hurt and his Mum thought I did a very good job of avoiding him, black skidmarks over the road and all.

How do you know a feral cat from a pet one?

I don't. Thing is, I don't like cats. I don't hit fluffy ones, but the evil-looking tabby ones I aim for. Seriously, cats are normally far too fast to get hit anyway.

Possums and Rabbits = pests. Maybe in the city you don't see them much or don't realize the problems they cause to farmers and native wildlife, trees etc. Besides, the dogs like them. Hit them, throw them in the boot and take them home. :2cents:

636636 2008-02-03 22:59:00 fair point, havent been to the country at night for over 3 years thats almost 1/4 of my life! lol AMD3ALL3THE3WAY3 (116)
636637 2008-02-03 23:03:00 LOL! In the states it's illegal to eat your own road kill. You can take others though. Like in that topgear deepsouth episode where Jeremy Clarkson drove up with a bloated dead cow on his roof. Funny stuff. Rabbits, sure, possums, sure. But cats? Really? It's amazing how you'll swerve without actually deciding to do it. Stupid sub-conscious. Had to swerve really bad the other day when a taxi just pulled out onto the road without even looking. Taxi drivers are the flies of the road. It should be legal to shoot them. Thebananamonkey (7741)
