636711 2008-02-03 07:35:00 Yeah, I've noticed we have more too. Cat loves to chase them but he doesn't kill them! A good squirt of fly spray knocks them back, and then you can dispose of them, But I found spraying Raid or Mortein Surface Spray by the doorways and window frames, or anywhere they are likely to come in, and under the fridge and stove and along the skirtings works quite well.

Just because you have them in the house doesn't mean its dirty either, they just like to come in anyway. Good luck!

636712 2008-02-03 07:53:00 Cans of BV2 sprays, and roach traps in warm areas. Make sure to check cracks and nooks n crannies as well.

Problem is, you make any such noise, whether it be a cough or clearing of throat, and they scarper off.

Try Borax mixed with either flour or sugar. Place in warm corners.

I think we could just build a nuclear power plant in NZ, it would be a hell of a lot safer. Anyway, Fat Man is a waaaay better name.

636716 2008-02-03 20:32:00 A couple of weeks ago I found a cockroach doing breaststroke in the fur kid's water bowl outside and tried holding it under the water for a couple of minutes to drown it . Its legs were still moving after that time, however, and since I didn't have all day to stand there holding it under I got a piece of wood to do the job .

A couple of hours later a family member came and asked me why I was trying to drown the weta .

"What weta?" I said . "That's a cockroach . And what do you mean, 'trying' to drown it?"

Apparently, since I have never seen a live cockroach (lucky me) nor any wetas around Christchurch, I had got my insect identification wrong . Fortunately this weta was drownproof as even after being submerged for two hours it still managed to stagger off back where it came from after being rescued . :dogeye:

I'm still smarting over my error .

Whoops!

I one foolishly left my gumboots outside one wet night, went to put them on first thing in the morning and low and behold there was a very large Weta in one of them. The feeling of putting a bare foot into a wet gumboot and feeling a Weta is not one I'd like to repeat in the near future.

Must have been a wee baby weta to mistake it for a cockroach going by the size of normal bush wetas.

636719 2008-02-04 04:22:00 Jen, I can well understand why Foxy got her identification wrong in ChCh.
I think it's a South Island thing.

Here in Dunedin, I've never seen either cockroaches or wetas - though we may have a few wetas in our Town Belt,I guess.

I saw my very first cockroaches in Sydney.
I met my first weta (and it was a real giant) in an Auckland kitchen late one night when I was the only person at home.
I had no idea what it was & what it could do - jump or fly at me, bite or nip..?
I was so scared of it I opened a window, shut the door & was relieved to find it gone next morning.

That was decades ago, and I've never seen once since..

Umm . . . . yeah . Why?

Oh wait, now I remember . :D :D

Don't think mine was a baby though, it was about this <holds finger and thumb 4cm apart> big .

Laura: I've seen plenty of weta, mainly over the West Coast and other places, but the only cockroach I've ever seen was a dead one pinned to a board in the museum .
