787251 2009-06-30 09:51:00 For the first PC you will need to do a chkdsk /f on it from recovery console.

What does it freeze on in safe mode?

Perform a chkdsk /f on the second machine also. Sounds like file system is corrupt.

787252 2009-06-30 20:44:00 Is it an AMD system, and was SP3 installed on it recently? Try last known good config
I mentioned I can't get into any mode - whether safe, etc. so the last good config is also out. It does not freeze at any place, Blam6, because it won't accept any F8 options - it just revert back to the loop.

Check the BIOS make sure the hdd is the bootdisk. Also make sure the IDE or SATA cables are in properly
Did that, they were fine

I do think I will try chkdsk /f on both, but got no idea how to get to the command prompt on the older machine - it won't accept any command. Will continue to try tho, and if all else fails, reformat end reinstall Windows.

My problem : I think once I've got the newer machine going it will probably have a few nasties on it as well.

Question : On the laptop I removed everything but when I go to the Control Panel (Vista Home) I still see an entry for the Bullseye Tool bar that can't be moved as well as one for the ECO bar, also unmovable?

787253 2009-06-30 21:33:00 The first PC, as Speedy mentioned if its an AMD then it may be the reboot cycle from upgrading to SP3 - IF it is, then you either need a third party CD to run system restore back to before the upgrade was installed, or do a repair install. Then once going, install The patch from MS (www.microsoft.com).

IF the PC has the recovery console installed (it normally will show quickly on boot up) then you can disable the intel problem, Heres How:

load the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
→ Type the number that corresponds to your Windows installation
→ Log in as an administrator
→ Type cd c:\windows\system32\drivers at the command prompt
→ Type rename intelppm.sys XXXintelppm.syx
→ Restart Windows

The unmountable boot volume -- I would seriously consider reinstalling the OS , after slaving the drive and getting any data off. I have seen this many times, and while sometimes it can be repaired, I have generally found it doesn't last long before something fowls up again.

787254 2009-06-30 22:08:00 Thx Wainui sarel (2490)
787255 2009-07-01 01:07:00 I will stop helping out. (The lady said "O no, I haven't done anythink since you were here last" and when I asked why they did not follow instructions :"O you fix it so easily and for free". It seems to me like I'm doing this every 6 months, every time the infections/problems are worse than before.
I had someone like this so set up PCLinuxOS on there PC without giving them the root password and apart from the husband forgetting their account password when the wife was away I have not heard from them in over a year. Previously the kids used to trash their PC every few months.

787256 2009-07-05 00:04:00 OK I've now been trying a few days to fix the "fixable" HD. Tried to fix it first from the Recovery Console but had no luck - no console. Could not get it to get out of the frickin loop. Slaved it, tried to reformat it but it wouldn't complete the format, and now the HD is not recognised anywhere (not in Windows, UBCD, command prompt). Looks to me as if it is stuffed?

787258 2009-07-05 00:58:00 You could boot from a linux live CD and see if it can format it, but its probably on its last legs.. Blam (54)
787259 2009-07-19 22:13:00 Sarel, NOD32 V4 has a rescue CD option under tools which uses MS AIK to make a bootable disk. Try that chillisoft (15055)
787260 2009-07-19 23:18:00 Thanks for that Chillisoft.

Chillisoft, I've got that disk (I've got Nod32) but haven't tried it - I can't see it working if UBD don't work. In any case I've already told the lady both HD's are stuffed and both PC's are now in the safe hands of one of our members.

I will remember the Nod32 bootdisk should my own HD fails, thanks

sarel
