But when it starts to be hard to get 3rd party protection (not to mention drivers, utilitites, apps etc), I start recommending people upgrade.

Yes budget can be an issue but there is always 2nd hand.

I sorted an ME PC the other week and I've told her it's probably the last time, once Avast etc stop working then she'll need to change.
She's saving now.............

787042 2009-06-30 09:58:00 Yes well I'm a die hard. I've spent $60 so far on IT (software hardware firmware liveware whateverware) and don't want to spend any more because I think it's all overpriced and if you exercise yr mental elbow you can do lots for little. If the hardware keeps going I'll use whatever I can on it. Linux or one of the other hundreds (if not thousands*) of OSs available. If that means reduced functionaluity (eg can no longer watch Michael Jackson pop clips) then that's ok.

*I understand one of the tasks for computer science courses is to write an OS.

787043 2009-06-30 12:29:00 I knew someone who was still running 98 last year, with a firewall but no antivirus. She has mainly uses email and reading news.

She never got a virus to the disbelief of friends. One guy spent hours poring over this computer to check for nasties and he turned up nothing.

Maybe she was lucky, maybe it's gone to such a low share that the hackers don't go for it, maybe she was just careful enough with her web habits. I don't know but I still remember people's faces seeing it.

It's a good thing Microsoft moved to the NT architecture after ME.
