636880 2008-02-03 07:30:00 I keep all my personal tax related papers for 7 years. Just keep my credit card statements until the next one arrives to make sure the previous payment has been recorded.
Thanks. I think I will do likewise and get rid of my accumulation of papers.

636881 2008-02-03 07:31:00 Buy a shredder if you can. I got one at a clearance price of $30 brand new from Mitre10 Mega, and shredded several years worth of bank statements and credit card bills. It made nice "filler" for aerating our compost too, though recycling is also an option. somebody (208)
636882 2008-02-03 07:41:00 I usually keep mine for about three months. Power and phone about 1 year and tax and WINZ stuff for two years. Insurance statements 1 year. Rates invoices 2 years. lakewoodlady (103)
636883 2008-02-03 07:42:00 Don't but a plastic shredder, they break too quick! lakewoodlady (103)
636884 2008-02-03 08:00:00 My Dad had a piece of card in his files that I found 2 years ago. Hand written on it was a note saying "Keep until 1953".

I asked him if anyone in the family had ever thrown out any piece of paper they had ever looked at. He thought for a while and replied "Only by accident".

Dad kept every bank book, tax return, bank statement, share certificate, insurance policy... that he ever got. And the cancellation letters etc in a variety of different places. Haven't found them all.

It's been a nightmare trying to figure out what is still current since his death. I'm annoying a lot of people ringing them up to find out if things are still active (and finding they aren't).

It's made me look closely at the stuff I've kept so I don't leave a lot of red herrings for my kids.

That is one of the reasons that have made me review what is kept.

636886 2008-02-03 08:58:00 We are in business so it is 7 years for anything taxable. Anything else your choice.

But as someone who has had to clear up the mess... get rid of stuff that is no longer relevant. Please.

636887 2008-02-03 09:52:00 Oh Mercury - -Historians will going all historical.

Only destroy stuff from the government and Microsoft. Everything else is potentially valuable.

636888 2008-02-03 10:08:00 We were talking general financial records. Family papers are a separate issue. I have boxes of them for safe keeping. They were not given to my brother to look after as his wife WOULD throw them out. Mercury (1316)
636889 2008-02-03 10:11:00 Financial is "Interesting" even if only to reveal that the purchase price of the family home was the same as 5 radiograms, or 2% of the current rates. R2x1 (4628)
