636560 2008-02-04 08:00:00 It is an inevitable result of all these iSubs, the submersible Apple. When they go off line there is a bit of port flooding, and the cable leaks. Steve Jobs announced that iTunes will soon be on the iSat service, and the rest of you who have no apple can go suck a lemon. R2x1 (4628)
636561 2008-02-04 08:02:00 Presuming we are talking about data cables not Cook Strait power feeds, because I haven't read any relevant news yet:

You can't "blow up" a data cable. You can reach data capacity, or the cable may physically deteriorate through ingress of water etc and suffer reduced capacity, but that is all.

Cheers

Re the Cook Straight Cables. I worked on this project back in 1964. One of 19 families of Electricians brought from the UK to work on the job.
6 went to Haywards 13 to Benmore. I worked at both places.

One cable HAS been damged & repaired & the other two have had maintenance work done on them. Not sure if one has been completely replaced or not.To keep the water out, nitrogen is pumped into the cable core from both ends. The pressure at each end is monitored. Using pressure loss from these readings it is possible to plot, roughly, where water is getting into the cables.

I visited Haywards Substation about 20 years ago & it struck me then how shabby the DC place looked. I also visited Benmore Power Station & that looked as good as new. Did no get to see the Benmore DC valve house.

I imagine that NO SERIOUS money has been spent on renewal or upgrades. I am probably wrong.

If we still had the MOW & NZED still, would we be having power dificulties now?

The Dams etc that they built between them were not the cheapest in the World, but how many of them have failed. Like in some other countries?

636564 2008-02-04 08:20:00 95% of the world's internet traffic is carried by undersea cables. Terrorists should have struck a long time ago to have any sort of impact. To REALLY isolate a region, you need to cut atleast 5-7 cables in order to achieve your goal and even then companies and ISP's have multiple redundancy systems. beeswax34 (63)

636566 2008-02-04 18:17:00 No. Not really. Just my suspicious mind. I think IF I was a terrorist it would have been one of the first things I would have targeted.

Yes targeting People is frightening. Transportation bombings are a nuisance only, soon got around.

Damaging communications cables causes more personal inconvenience to MORE people around the World.

Don't know why Terrorists haven't thought of it before no.

But then again, it could just be a huge coincidence. A case of three ships dragging their anchors. PJ

I'll bet the terrorists are kicking themselves ,that you are not one of them, all those good ideas.

636567 2008-02-04 18:47:00 I have read that it is the Americans trying out the new version of their ship the "Jimmy Carter", it is a special ship which is used to insert a "man in the middle" on undersea cables whilst they are still 'live' for surveillance purposes.

They are still trying to get the process perfected.
