636731 2008-02-03 02:28:00 If NZ'ers are not prepared to accept Nuclear power as the way of the future, don't protest at the defacing of the landscape with large scale hydro dams, wind farms etc, and also learn to live with global waring with all it's consequences.
Its a pretty simple choice - as long as one doesn't allow the tree huggers and flat earthers to call the tune. These strident minorities, using ignorance and fear to push their cause, have a say well in excess of their % representation in the population.

636732 2008-02-03 05:50:00 I can’t understand why the Greens have a hang-up with Hydro Power.

Every Hydro Dam I’ve seen, seems to me to be a real asset, disregarding the power it supplies.

Just another example of “The road to Hell being paved with good intentions” I guess.

636733 2008-02-03 06:38:00 Very interesting program.

That reporter had some balls going into Chernobyl etc.

I am not a greenie, but I say we should try to stay away from nuclear [power as long as possible. Its just too risky and the waste problem and decommisioning the power stations (eg that UK one will take 3 years ! and God knows how much)

But we do not to get real and build some more thermals and hydros and some decent power cables... NOE

Nuclear accidents don't cause emotional upset. It causes radiation sickness.

636735 2008-02-03 21:36:00 Look at the mess Chernobyl caused. And Russia is huge so it wasn't a problem evacuating entire towns.

Can NZ afford to lose half an island?

Just look at the first cars in the road.. How dangerous they were or trains . You still drive a car or go by train?? Sounds like your scaremongering to me..

636736 2008-02-03 22:13:00 This is obviously a highly emotive issue for some people.

Personally I believe New Zealand should consider building Nuclear power plants very near where the power is required.

In this case one in Auckland and perhaps another near Tiwai Point. This would look after two of the major players in power consumption and cost less in transmission costs. We would probably not need the Cook Stait cable if we did that.

Some of the cons can be found here:-
www.infoplease.com

Other cons are the cost of decommissioning and where to get rid of the waste along with losing our "nuclear free" status. Be aware that we are not nuclear free in New Zealand as there are radiactive isotopes stored for medical purposes around the country.

Some people think that anything nuclear is "bad" without weighing up all the issues.

Some people object to transmission lines going all over the country as well and do not want to live underneath one.

Some train or car crashes, it affects those directly involved, not everyone else within a 500KM radius.

I don't remember Chernobyl's fallout spreading to NZ. What your part of is just fear and hype and so are a LOT of NZ's. No one got sick yet we fear it. If that isn't emotional then I dont know what is.

None of it is killing us. Please lets get real, I lived about 1hr's drive away from Bombay's nuclear reactor. I'm not too scared of nuclear power or Ceasar's breaths.
