787875 2009-07-01 21:04:00 To backup OE emails, first go into Options, Maintenance and change the Store location to somewhere else, like a folder in their MyDocuments or somewhere convenient.

Then exit OE.

Copy the entire Store folder over to it's new location, set up OE again if necessary, then Import from that folder.

787876 2009-07-01 22:21:00 Do I need to st any specific security access for those folder in order not be access by other users ?
Depends how honest your users are and how complicated you wish to make things .

If this is the case what would be the username ? would be username for his email address or username for his widows login ?If your employees are Jack, Jill and Alex .
Make 3 new folders on the server with the same name .
Also create 3 new users with passwords to the server via the control panel "users" .
Right click each folder and give Jim access to Jim folder etc . .

I am pretty sure it is OE,,,,what would be the option in case of outlook 2003 ?
The settings I gave were for Outlook Express as asked .

787877 2009-07-16 10:26:00 then map a network drive to the server from each desktop. I would call it e:

Then in OE from the tools menu > Options > Maintenance Tab > Store Folder button, then browse to drive e:
This did not work ,,,,,,,,,,,,and I just who verified that as you can see in the below link:

www.insideoe.com

You cannot move the store to a network drive (www.insideoe.com) nor a removable drive.

Any workaround this issue ?

I tried to follow instruction to edit the registry for OE as advised in the link above but it did not change the origin store location when I checked the Maintenance tab!!!!

This issue can occur because the Outlook Express message folder must be located on a local hard disk, not on removable media or a network share.

787881 2009-07-17 12:04:00 looks like its turning into a complete disaster.

In the original post you wanted to backup 3 PC's email to a server.
backup emails for each employee from his/her computer to a server (Plan it will be a dedicated basic PC for this purpose)

In post #2 & 6 Balm and myself suggested the same program that would do this -- If you created a folder on the server, added in 3 more folders, 1 for each person, then from their PC's use the software to make backups to the server (which is what was asked).

Another progarm I use a LOT of in customers LAN's as well as my own is HandyBackup (www.handybackup.com) - Its not free, ( one time payment) but it does do what you want, it will backup any file, and there's a plug in for Outlook.

Since you want to backup Outlook Express, you need to locate the store folder in the path, that way it grabs all the .dbx files at once.

Works perfectly on a LAN.

I have had it on my PC, backing up mine and 4 others to a Server in the workshop.

You would only need to install it on the Server - and tell it to pull the files you want from each PC at the time you schedule it.

Theres a free trial so you can test to make sure it works for you.

Edited: By changing the Store location of 3 or more to a Server is asking for trouble.

If that server fails or shuts down, then all 3 people will either lose all email or wont have any until the server is back up.
Doing backups to a server is good - I would leave the original store locations alone.

787882 2009-07-19 06:24:00 Definitely follow WT's and blam's advice. OE was never meant to be a server /network based solution - that way leads to disaster.

In general, if it isn't simple, look harder for the simple or elegant solution!

787883 2009-07-19 06:56:00 Just an Update -

Tried that backup program as mentioned earlier on A workshop PC to an ubuntu server-- Worked great .

Wiped out all the emails from OE - and ran the restore - once again perfect .

The scheduled time worked perfectly as well .
