2009-06-30 03:00:00 | Once I suspect/confirm a virus , I remove the hard drive & run the initial scans via a clean pc with the infected HD as a secondary. That way I can more easily get the latest sig updates (very important). Given several different AV & spyware scanners have to be run on it, can take anywhere from 4hours up,so its just easier to do it this way. Some PC's just will never boot off USB pendrives anyway (take note Gigabyte) But, unfortunately some Laptops its not practical to remove the HD for scanning - stupid design requiring the case to be split for access. --------------- also... Check the hosts file Default IE, delete temp int files Delete in files in Win\prefetch, also swap & hyberate files & win temps Disable system restore & re-enable when finished Run hijack this (be carefull) Disable any P2P programs that startup automatically. Check Win firewall is on & check exceptions

2009-06-30 03:25:00 | Hey thanks for that guys.:clap I don't do this every day and for money - and this particular friend's children (teenagers) have been banned from their PC, but the one laptop is actually the daughter's, and it sounds like a nasty b*gger on there. What worries me is the PC also being infected (she only checks email with it) as well as her EEEPc (same as PC). I think the children used these as well, on the sly, and d/l'ed the infections. Well, until now I could help her every time - sometimes with your help and sometimes just running the appropriate software. I will report back and thanks again (in advance) sarel

2009-06-30 03:28:00 | I've got Nod32 (subscribed) - is there any way of throwing a copy of that onto an USB or do you have a seperate sub just for that? sarelI always carry the Trial Version (www.eset.com) with me - it works fully for 30 days, it the person wants to purchase it they simply click on upgrade after purchasing the license, it converts over and carries on. Also , depending on whats wrong with the PC / Laptop, it may be better to bring it back to the workshop, sometimes it will take several hours to run scans, and clean out a PC, or need to be slaved to a another PC to do the first clean . Edited: got one here at the moment - Had Nortons ( no more need to be said about that crap:rolleyes: ) I'll be damned surprised if it even boots after cleaning it out -- think I'll reinstall from fresh.

2009-06-30 03:48:00 | I take a portable HDD rtahre than a pendrive. never know when you might have to back up their stuff..... On it are: Malware Bytes, Avast, AVG, NOD32 Trial, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D, HijackThis, Combofix, Trojan Remover, CCleaner and other stuff... Some for Win98 PCs, some for Vista 64bit etc. I have install files for all sorts of utilities on it as well. I also have a USB to IDE adapter, a sata to USB (2.5" and 3.5") and a 2.5" IDE for connecting drives. Sometimes it's best to bring it back and I'll sometimes scan while connected to my PC if really bad. And sometimes it's so knackered it might have to be a wipe, so I'll scan and backup their data first.

2009-06-30 04:06:00 | I agree. If the problems are major, I will remove all their stuff and take it home to do at my leisure. And I've also decided that if they don't follow my instructions - like updating the signature files of whatever packages I've installed and running weekly scans - I will stop helping out. (The lady said "O no, I haven't done anythink since you were here last" and when I asked why they did not follow instructions :"O you fix it so easily and for free". It seems to me like I'm doing this every 6 months, every time the infections/problems are worse than before. Next time one of the techies in town will be the lucky one to do the work - and they charge an arm and a leg. Or perhaps I should start charging them ..... nah, I don't know enough, I'm just a newbyish guy-who-knows-some-stuff. 'Nuff said. I'm pretty peeved off, mind you, them not following plain and simple instructions. Last time I did put all the packages that could on auto update and auto scan "but I stopped it because it made the web pages load slower for about 15 minutes". sarel

2009-06-30 05:09:00 | "O you fix it so easily and for free" Thats taking advantage of your good will -- Wait till they have to pay for the service -- then they'll think differently. | wainuitech (129) | |
2009-06-30 06:10:00 | Thats taking advantage of your good will -- Wait till they have to pay for the service -- then they'll think differently . You think? I still come across them . I had Porn Dude once, the entire time I cleaned out his filthy infested PC (at his house) he sat and watched porn movies . Rang me the following weekend as it was back to being infested . Cleaned again . Next weekend told his mate what to do as he seemed more interested, they both rang back AGAIN the following weekend . Repeated original instructions, refused to come . "Oh but we PAY you" . Don't care, get another tech . . . . . . . . And he had the most gorgeous high end PC too, did nothing at all with except porn . No emails, nothing, just porn . What a waste . . . . . . . . . .

2009-06-30 06:31:00 | I travel light. Only carry AVG (I update the installer before going), Spybot, and Cain (both windows 9x and 2k+ versions) (for password recovery). That was until my pen drive was stolen :(

2009-06-30 09:05:00 | I am busy removing a few nasties from the laptop - currently running Spybot, Malwarebytes and Avira. The other two : the first one an older PC, boot up but once it get to the WinXP splash screen it reboot and it stay in this continual cycle. No error messages. No idea what's wrong, can't boot into any mode. Suggestions? Second one : a bit newer PC, also get to the WinXP splash screen but then it gives me the error "Unmountable boot volume" with a message that there may be some hardware not installed properly. I checked everything, seemed fine. No XP installation disk to fix the reboot - it sits in the D:drive. Googling it says it's the file system so I will try and fix this tomorrow (F11 on Startup and then Repair). Am I right? sarel
