2009-06-29 10:59:00 | PJ - IE is all VB, i dont even know if IE on win98 can be updated anymore, support for the o/s was stopped june last year, or was it the year before, therefore any security holes are no longer patched. Hackers dont go after the o/s, they go after flaws in the o/s security which is primarily the o/s shell! | SolMiester (139) | |
2009-06-29 11:14:00 | In the long term you could load up some linux distro on that old box, but it would depend if the win98 only programs would work in wine, or if there are any linux alternatives | Netsukeninja (13296) | |

So we have a user on an unsupported and most unreliable o/s ever put together bt MS with security ridden IE6.......oh dear...I would rather use a linux distro for sure rather than Win98 or ME for that matter.... |

2009-06-29 21:30:00 | Firefox 2 still works on Windows 98. :D | pcuser42 (130) | |
2009-06-29 21:55:00 | wow, people still use 98?.....its like the most unsecure o/s ever They are all unsecure. Avast works but I found it wouldn't automatically scan. Win98 is becoming unusable because there are so few programs for it now. Try finding antispyware, Spybot works but the rest won't. Only really old versions of Spyware Terminator.

2009-06-29 23:08:00 | I never set things to scan automatically because the box simply hasn't got the grunt to do that and something else as well. Multi-tasking for me means doing a scan while doing the dishes. And no I don't get any spam. I use Yahoo though AFAIK spam's more to do with your ISPs and client's filtering and yr AV than the OS. This comp - 333mhz processer, a whopping 128 megs RAM (I upgraded it from 32) and 9 gig HD. Sygate, Avast, CCleaner and Spybot keep me going. When I get issues I hunt around and can ususally find a fix even if it involves regedit. I come here to Pressf1 as a last resort if I can't fix things myself. Not because I don't appreciatte yr help, I certainly do, but because I like to fix it myself - that's my computing experience - simply keeping this rattly old thing going. Anyway just thought I'd post this to let you know there are some ancient boxes out here that still go. Cheers M

2009-06-30 00:00:00 | Running an ancient OS (98) is a good exercise. Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is ancient. And I still run it. On my 486. Along with DOS 6.22 You just can't beat it for playing all the old classic games Not to mention the look on some people's faces when you tell them

2009-06-30 01:42:00 | Running W98se and no spam at all on Email. Don't need firewalls etc - Avast works fine plus a Browser high jack blaster. Avg was OK but as stated, no more updates. Would take a couple of years to count up how many fixes have put out for XP. Surprised that anyone uses it, but assume they don't know better. And I do use FF:) | Peter H (220) | |
