788486 2009-07-03 05:50:00 Hi guys,

got a bit of a wierd problem. I've seen it posted up on other forums but its such a stupid problem theres no constructive answers for it.

basically ants have taken over my LCD monitor, they live inside and crawl all over it. It happened over one or two days while I was away and I cant get rid of them...imagine the most annoying moving dead pixels you've ever seen.

My two theories are

A) they like the static electricity and or the charge of the air around the components (pretty sure insects are sensitive to the charge of the air)

B)Its nice and warm in there

Ive pretty much got a moat of ant killer around the base of the monitor but they dont wanna come out...dont know what there eating.

any ideas would be appreciated :badpc:

I wonder if you could somehow suffocate them? But you'd still have to get them out of there.

Leave the monitor off for ages and have a vacuum cleaner or something blowing on it, maybe they'll get sick of it being dark and cold and leave?

Apart from that you'd have to pull the screen apart, it's not too hard if you know what you're doing, any tech should be able to do it without too much hassle, it would void any warranty, but I suspect the ants may have already done that.

788488 2009-07-03 06:03:00 This happened to me with a printer, I put it in a large poly bag, added flyspray and sealed it. I guess you would have to be careful about surfaces but think gas chamber. steelsporran (6566)

Wouldnt that result in a stack of dead ants though? unless they actually dropped out...

OP - Can I pretty pretty please have a photo :wub

What about the cables? The ants could be coming & going via them, to the PC and then on from there.

Leave out a bowl of sugar laced with some fly spray - ants love sugar.

788494 2009-07-03 10:02:00 Simple answer is that they are from a larger nest, so get some Raid liquid ant killer (small red plastic bottle) and put it in a milk bottle cap on the ant trail to the LCD.

Ants are industrious and dedicated little creatures, and will not only drink the poison and take it back to the main nest to kill that, they will also pick up and carry away all of their dead fellows (including any inside the monitor) if you just leave them to it for a couple of days.

Don't use flyspray as you may prevent them from cleaning up properly. We find that they drink all the poison and leave the container empty and clean, even taking away those that have drowned in the liquid. You may find the odd dead ant left behind, perhaps in the monitor, but more often than not they take the lot!

Raid is the best ant poison we have ever used, so that is why I recommend it.

Cheers

788495 2009-07-03 10:51:00 I had ants set up home in a scanner I had.
In the end I pulled it apart and cleaned it out with a vacum cleaner.
Always scanned with a slight line in the picture/file after that.......
