787953 2009-07-01 10:06:00 Hi Guys, this might go way over my head but I was asked to connect computers in a small office.
These computers need to connect to a network, which has a citrix access.
Soooo
Do I just a get a 4 port router, connect all computers to this router, so that the internet connection can be equalled? I know 2 pc's have XP or Vista but there is a dinosaur PC that is on Windows 98.

Could you guys give me some help or advise how to set this all up, am not sure at this stage if the pc's share files amongst each other, that is for later concern. They all probably use the same copier and printer..
I have tried googling but am not sure exactly what to google, any tips for internet sites? cheers Mark

787954 2009-07-01 10:36:00 Not sure what citric access is, but in a typical environment a 4 port router would allow 4 users to connect to the internet, yes.

All you should need to do is plug it in, set up DHCP, a few settings and you're done.

As for file sharing thats pretty simple. Right Click>Properties>Share etc

Then assign user accounts for sharing data(Security)

You'd want them on the same workgroup for easier access.

787955 2009-07-01 10:42:00 Yeah, thanks blam for your reply, it is Citrix network and yes I want them all on the same network, so I must google DHCP, I am not familiar with that.. the rest is pretty simple then.. mark1978 (13845)
787956 2009-07-01 10:43:00 What will you plug the router into? If there already are existing routers assigning IPs then you can disable DHCP on this 4 port router

BTW DHCP Server assigns IPs to computers:)

787957 2009-07-01 10:47:00 Nah at the moment there is not even an internet connection, it all needs to be set up.. they have asked me if I could do it and I am willing to give it a go..
But I thought to get one of those gateway modem/router.. i just looked on dick smith website

787958 2009-07-01 12:08:00 Where is this office Mark?

This might be a job for someone that knows what they are doing.

It might take you all day to sort though various problems that can arise or it might take me an hour to get you running.

Just a thought!

787959 2009-07-01 21:22:00 yup just get yourself a router for your internet connection and make sure that it has a built in dhcp server (most of them do).

You may also need to buy a switch if the router does not have enough network ports on it for all the computers...most have 4. Then just plug the clients into the switch and the switch into the router.

One thing to find out is how they connect to the citrix server. Often a small office will have a vpn connection from their router to the office where the citrix server is located. If that is the case then you may need to be picky about which router you get.

Filesharing / printing may be a little bit of fun to get going between all those different versions of windows but is definitely doable. You will also need to share the printer/s off of one of the clients computers so that everyone can access it over the network.

Hope that helps

787960 2009-07-02 02:32:00 citrix : you really need a tech onsite if you are stuck at this early stage
you may also need printers setup on the citrix server to allow local printing
via that citrix connection

Hi Mark, sorry if i sound rude but i agree with HAL, you do need someone who has a bit of knowledge in setting up a network (even a small one). you will get plenty of help on this site but someone needs to be that the work site for the initial setup for shares and files and the router itself.
