638582 2008-02-12 09:51:00 What I'd like is for all prisoners to live in utter crap. Their cells are small, they are fed basic crap, they are not given any medical care unless it is absolutely necessary (eg bad infections, other illnesses that will kill them unless cared for).

And take away all means of entertainment, such as TVs, radios, game consoles. However, keep educational books. Make the work hard labour at a meager pay. That will be their exercise.

All the above will save hundreds of thousands of dollars for us taxpayers. If we can't have the money back, I'd rather pay mental institutes to help refugees like that woman. A much better cause than keeping those prisoners happy in their supposedly hellhole.

Why even bother keeping them alive? Just kill the lot by your logic. What we need to do is to look at the effectiveness (and the purpose) of the prison system. What do we want to do? Do we want to punish people for bad deeds? Or do we want to make it so that people are unlikely to reoffend?
Punishment makes little sense to my mind, what's the point? They're unlikely to learn any lessons from cruelty, and if released they're more likely to reoffend, which really negates the whole purpose of anything in the first place. If people don't reoffend then they suck less money from the system, because they spend less time total in prison. Also they then contribute to society by paying tax.
Punitive imprisonment has been proven not to work. Look at the states for this. Look at finland for an example of logical, humanitarian, sentencing. Rehabilitate, spend more on cleaning them up, and getting them out. Less on just keeping them alive for years at a time. There's no point. What sort of life is that anyway?

Yeah right, like she or anyone else is going to be rehabilitated when they could ive a VERY comfortable life in jail. I'm all for either 3 options: fry them, deport them or jail them in absolutely inhospitable conditions so they learn not to commit crime again. I'm not going to support a woman who almost killed 60 ppl being given some stupid amount of community service and then having 18 other nut jobs being brought into the country later on.

Get Real. Show them who's boss. Hey, atleast we don't torture, that should keep you happy.

638584 2008-02-12 12:15:00 This would have to be the funniest news item in a long time.

What moron would expect a small plane like that would take her to Australia, it probably would barely have enough fuel supply to get it to Dunedin let alone Aussie.

There sure are some dumb people in this world.

tvnz.co.nz

What person would pre judge a case before hearing the evidence?
In your Sig you have "never assume".

It appears to me that this is trial by media again.

If the events reported are true then maybe the person did the acts with the wish to be deported. Who knows? I was not on the aircraft at the time.

Hijacking carries a penalty of life in prison. In NZ murder can carry the same penalty. Life usually means around 14 years or less depending on the parole board. Some people get out and some do not.

In the event I was accused of a crime I would not like to have the like of you on the jury. This because you have made your mind up at this time.

If you think the news item is funny then that is your thought and not mine.

um . . . . . . . yeh it doesn't work here either . . . . . . . . cause we dont have it !!

Rehabilitate, spend more on cleaning them up, and getting them out .

spend more ? . . . . . hell last time I looked a 170 bed prison cost $340million ! insanity . Thats $2M per 'bed' . . . . . coulda built em lots of VERY nice houses for that price instead !

Less on just keeping them alive for years at a time . There's no point . What sort of life is that anyway?

I reckon that if we spend less on keeping them alive that would be a great idea . . . . . . hey recent reading tells me that even the 'corrections' dept admits that rehabiliation schemes, which cost millions to run, had failed miserably . . . . in fact it has been proven that such schemes result in a HIGHER rate of re-offending ! Insanity again ! . . . . . .

why not lets try this: make prison a place you DONT want to be . . . . . . . make it 6x6 concrete cells with nothing to do only four walls to look at and ONE meal a day . . . . . . one very basic bed with one blanket and a hole to crap in . If you want to get out of your cell EVER, even for a few hours, you 'volunteer' for hard labour .

I'll GUARANTEE that the rate of offending would dramatically reduce . . . . . . . . . . after all . . . . . . . . no one would want to live in those conditions . . . . . . . . and . . . . . .

What sort of life is that anyway?

IF YOU CANT DO THE TIME DONT DO THE CRIME . . . . . . . . and if you DO the crime and get caught and sent to that REALLY nasty place with four walls and a 6x6 cell I'll BET you wont want a repeat of that experience . . . . . . . . .

Oh yeh and at least DOUBLE all sentences . . . . . . . . . and NO parole . . . . .

I have never been to jail but the next time I see you doing 51 kph near a school you could go there for a long time.

If you think jail is VERY comfortable then may I suggest you try living in any for few years or even for a week.

638587 2008-02-12 12:38:00 So a number of people trust the police and the justice system to get it correct every time.

I have doubts sometimes over some cases.

Just my point of view.

I dont have to. Plenty of criminals stay in jail just because its comfortable and safe.

638589 2008-02-12 20:10:00 Prison is safe? Really? Are you sure about that? People stay in because they become institutionalised. They're in there so long that they don't know how to operate outside. Thebananamonkey (7741)
638590 2008-02-12 21:34:00 Some of the posters on this thread (and this forum ) disgust me.
No spark of humanity or tolerance.
Just sheer selfishness.
Now flame away.

Agreed. I feel that some other members got off easy when Chickenone (aka TedHeath) got banned the other day.

I would rant, but what's the point. If NZ ever became the country some people here appear to wish for it would be a horrible, nasty place.

638591 2008-02-12 21:53:00 Classic signs of Y Generation thinking?

When I was younger things I saw things as reasonably black and white with some shades of grey. As I've got older I see far more shades of grey and very little black and white.

But the younger ones don't seem to have grey in their vocabularies.
