637673 2008-02-07 13:00:00 I assume you are referring to crooks like Fay and Richwhite who gutted companies (and communities) then fled overseas because there's a price on their heads in NZ.
Perhaps there should be naming rights for lamp-posts.

Martynz

I have never admired Michael Fay or David Richwhite or Ron Brierley for that matter.

I searched extensively for the Fay Richwhite urinal and the Brierley spittoon in Auckland's Aotea Centre, because if anything should be named after these individuals it would be these facilities -

None of these men created anything for New Zealand except lost jobs, but incompetent business management of their victim companies was what made it possible. Competently managed companies should have market values sufficiently high to discourage the asset strippers/

637674 2008-02-07 19:23:00 There is a saying about established family type businesses " the Grandfather created and built the business - the son maintained it and the grandson ran it down and destroyed it"

Shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations. Was often quoted with refererce to the Kennedy family.

637675 2008-02-07 20:03:00 I have read this thread with interest.

The Government of the day get their advice from civil servants and we can't vote them out. In fact, the number of civil servants have grown lately.

As an ordinary voter I will have my vote at the next election but the choice of the voters in an electorate may not get rid of a list MP. This because the party decides whom is on the list and in what order.

At this time I have not yet decided whom to vote for.

I await policy statements from various parties.

There's nothing stopping anyone actually joining the party and having a say in this though is there? And stagnation? Please. When we have a large population of barely making ends meet families out there how can you say this? If wealth is redistributed then it's spent. Often the wealthy sit on their money or invest it overseas. Redistribution is the key to a healthy economy. Not just having a select few wealthy, but having a society that is fit and able. This would also take pressure off of the health and education system, as in the long term these people would be able to help themselves.
If you don't want to pay tax then go live somewhere else.

OK... that was a rant. But when you think about it, most people are only ever a bad year or two away from financial ruin. You may not want the government to be "hands on" and "controlling" now. But there's a chance that you may need them to be in the future.

Give us an example of what a government does for a country.

Sorry Cicero.

In my view it is what will the elected government do for New Zealand as a whole.

If the whole of the people benefit from policy then I will as well eventually.

Personally I would like to see improvements in education, health and police.

I do not need a tax cut but I would not say no to one.

A number of people whom are entitled to vote do not do so.

637682 2008-02-08 04:20:00 Give us an example of what a government does for a country.

The Government collects taxes and spends the said money on health, roads, dole, DPB and etcetera.

Now could you keep your TAX money and contract for a road in your area?
