637663 2008-02-06 03:35:00 Since the money grubbers on the right have gathered most of the spare money over the last 20 years and now are in almost complete control of the country the last big pool left they still have to get their hands on is the money obtained through taxes, they can't see that their philosophy has now reached fulfillment and the dream has not come true for most ordinary people, or indeed the jaded businessmen who only live to gather money and power.

The government is the last thing that can get money out of the hands of the few and back to the ordinary people where it belongs and that should be the governments primary function, to balance the inherent injustice of the capitalist money makers taking everything in the end.

As such the above statement of KenESmith is the epitome of disingenuousness.

637664 2008-02-06 05:08:00 I am not too sure about his 'wit'. It comes across to me more as sarcasm. I know how they compare wit and sarcasm, but he does not have that (often)delightful rhetoric ability that David Lange possessed. Regardless of what you think of the politics of either man.

Cheers,

Could you explain exactly what you mean (or imply) by that statement.

637667 2008-02-07 02:56:00 When did we last have a Socialist Government?

I'm sure there hasn’t been anything like a Socialist Government for over 50 years .

Although some quite intelligent people will argue that the nearest we've got in that time is Muldoon’s National government . :stare:

What we have got is a gaggle of politicians and not a Statesman among them . :groan:

637668 2008-02-07 02:58:00 Hi KenESmith... in view of your opinions about the rest of us, quote:

"The problem we have with politicians, and socialist politicians in particular, is that none of them can come to terms with the concept that the government has no money - its the peoples' money, and as such what gives any government the right to spend it unless it is for the benefit of the people or the nation as a whole. The politicians have a fiduciary duty to the people of the country to ensure their taxes are spent in a responsible manner - far to many of them fall far short of what is acceptable in this responsibility.
Expenditure by politicians aimed at keeping themselves in power, or currying favour with a particular pressure group, is merely bribing people with their own money - unfortunately too few people appear to be smart enough to recognise this when it is happening..",

we are indeed fortunate to have your advice.

zqwerty, So you see that a government as a matter of right can tax for the sole reasons of social engineering and wealth redistribution - welcome to the reality of a economic stagnation, and the flight of wealth and talent - what citizen of means would take an investment risk under such a regime - that opens the way for investment in growth to be overseas owned, while local entrepreneurs seek greener pastures in a foreign clime.
KenESmith (6287)
637670 2008-02-07 07:25:00 Well, KenESmith, I know that we must encourage entrepreneurs by offering tantalizing financial rewards to keep them interested but "mature individuals" by definition would know that the pursuit of wealth is only one aspect of a full life and that the satisfaction of seeing the people around one suddenly blossom and grow as the realization comes to all that life is not about the harvesting of material goods, is a reward in itself.

May I point you at this blog as an example of some one who is fully conversant with what I am trying to say and as a tempter I offer this quote which I see is being used as a sig. by another member of this forum:

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." H. L. Mencken

I assume you are referring to crooks like Fay and Richwhite who gutted companies (and communities) then fled overseas because there's a price on their heads in NZ.
Perhaps there should be naming rights for lamp-posts.

637672 2008-02-07 12:48:00 Fay Richwhite were not entrepreneurs, they were pirates who raped inefficiently run companies for personal gain - A well run business should have a market value sufficiently high that asset stripping it will generate less than the market value of the business. ie the market value exceeds the value of the sum of all the parts by a sufficient margin that asset stripping is not a viable proposition.

There is a saying about established family type businesses " the Grandfather created and built the business - the son maintained it and the grandson ran it down and destroyed it"
