Once you come back you can apply for the interest to cease again. But if you take off again, even for a short break in Oz during the next 6 months you're paying it again. If you are studying overseas you can apply for an exemption - but it costs $175. Thus the maths to see if applying for an exemption is worth the cost and headache on the paper work. My head hurts already. That's very interesting! My fiance is still paying interest on his loan, and another friend too... Yes, we did go overseas last year, and I've just calculated that we spent 160 days travelling overseas (give or take a few days), that's under the 183 days limit. As for the other friend, he hasn't gone overseas at all...I think it's time they go and visit IRD or whoever, and check out why they're paying interest. |

| 637471 | 2008-02-06 22:08:00 | And for anyone interested, exchanging to a university in the northern hemisphere is a minefield with Study Link and the IRD. They are set up for our semesters not overseas ones (Britain has 3 terms not 4). . That's strange, because as far as I know all Uni's in NZ work in 3 trimesters. Not even schools work in 4 terms anymore. But they couldn't justify the bureaucracy if it wasn't confusing... your confusion is keeping hundreds of call centre workers fed. |

The students that are there for only one semester end up with extra assignments instead of exams so that they can continue with their studies in their home countries instead of coming back after a 4 week break for a week or two. Student loans are designed for NZ semesters. (July start not Sept; big break over Christmas rather than 4 weeks; paperwork needing signatures whilst they are overseas...) |

| 637473 | 2008-02-07 02:29:00 | Advice to all students. Become independently wealthy BEFORE studying overseas. A letter today says that Study Link have closed her loan due to lack of documents. As they were posted to them - some from here, some from the UK - weeks ago my guess is they've lost them. And I did point out to them that even if they have lost the parental income forms it shouldn't matter as it is the second time this financial year they have asked for the information. I also pointed out that not having a time machine I haven't actually been back to 2006 to add to my income since they asked for it in July. And voice recognition software on telephones always puts me in a very bad mood particularly when they go into a long intro about how to use their web site first. (They cut me off on first call to add to the fury) |

| 637475 | 2008-03-15 09:22:00 | Hello, I am 26 years old and I am a college student who would like to apply for a student grant but I have a question and I need the answer. If I have student grants (not loans) and I fail a class, do I have to pay them back? Is there some kind of rule to this? I can't imagine getting paid for like 2 years and just keep failing and getting to keep the money. Thanks for the help. | karlahaze (13365) | ||
