I don't and seeing all that written from a chick was rather unusual.

I knew she was a she, but I'd have to agree with that! :lol:

638675 2008-02-15 00:57:00 I'm finding it hard to believe that Mercury was being anything other than sarcastic . I saw her posts as a sarcastic response to the ones she pointed out as being offensive .

Whether we get to find out if I am right or not will remain to be seen .

638676 2008-02-15 01:43:00 I don't, but I look at New Zealand and I see :
~ ACC pays criminals for breaking a leg while trying to escape;
~ offenders get more support than victims (including legal aid);
~ a widow is sent a bill for $19k for legal aid relating to the inquest into her husbands death;
~ jail is obviously not the hard time we think it is with TV's and play stations for inmates, and
~ the social experiment we are currently a part of is going to cause major crime problems in the future.

Do you think to yourself, "Gee, we aren't soft enough on criminals! We have to be softer so they might stop committing crimes!"?
I am with you Andy.

Being nice and being nasty doesn't solve the problem,so I vote for nasty in view of that seems to be all these chappies understand.

638678 2008-02-15 11:20:00 Probably . It wouldn't happen under a National Government . They wouldn't send inquest bills to widows / widowers - unlike the labour government and their hangers-on . .

My impression of Govt Departments is that, at the level of the petty bureaucrat, nothing much changes with passing executives . The culture of a department takes a lot of changing and that change takes a lot of time . Take CYPS for an example - they've exhibited the same breathtaking idiocy and scandals for a long time now .

If National can form a coalition this year (which is not a certainty) or if they can show the political maturity to run a non-majority government (which would run counter to National's entire track record) I still don't see them promoting any quick reform at the level of ministries and departments .

But your faith in them is touching .

I fail to understand why you think criminals who are, yet again, not following the rules of society by trying to escape from prison, should have the ACC rules applied to them? IMO if you go to prison you should lose these rights if, once again, you choose not to follow the rules of society .

If you go to prison you lose your liberty . That is the punishment - you lose that right . Prisoners are still part of our society when they are in prison . They still enjoy a great many protections and rights and that is for a good reason - which is the history of tyranny and oppression that western civilisation has grown from . We give prisoners rights because we have found that if we mistreat the people in society who don't fit in for whatever reason then we start moving back toward the Dark Ages .

Probably what I fail to understand is the mind of a criminal lawyer .

I could suggest some good books . . . . .

I've just caught up with this thread and I agree with Foxy's view of Mercury's posts as sarcastic, rather than actual beliefs.
But people needed to read the whole thread to realise that - rather than just looking at the later posts in isolation.

I was saddened to read some of the extreme viewpoints expressed by people who seemed to completely disregard the obvious mental illness aspect of this case.
And I found it offensive myself how some soon turned to slurs against refugees & immigrants in general - as if we'd never had any NZ-born individuals who committed crimes when mentally-impaired.

Some of you have "remedies" which would create a public outcry if applied to your pet cat or dog.
This thread does some posters no credit.
I don't plan to name them - or enter the fray - but just say I'm disappointed at the level of intolerance on two themes here.
I'm ignoring the imprisonment issue (There's no one answer to that & I'm not a masochist) but I'd hoped for less ignorance of mental illness & less racism.

And yes, there was racism, so let's not have indignant protestations, please...

Some people just fail to see that.

638681 2008-02-15 18:52:00 I love immigration. I think it's great. We stand only to be enriched by other cultures and I don't see that there are any real downsides. Also, a lot of New Zealanders bugger off overseas every year and I don't hear any protests about that....

As for refugees, NZ takes responsibility as a member of the United Nations to take a certain number of refugees a year (I think the figure may be 400 but that might have changed). If the poo hit the fan here and our society went pear shaped then other countries would accept our refugees as well.
