640418 2008-02-14 23:36:00 Hi all,
Another way off topic thread but wonder if there are any professional painters out there.

I have foolishly succumbed to SWMBO and we are painting first our bathroom then the other rooms. I have stripped the walls, had them plastered and applied pigmented sealer and am now in the process of, what I thought, undercoating then painting.

Went to price up undercoat and paint in a couple of shops and prices are about the same. Last shop I went to however said that if I have used 'pig sealer' then I dont need to undercoat? I can paint straight away.

I liked this idea as it will save me money of course but wonder - is this common practice? I explained my situation to the other stores and no one mentioned that I can paint over pig sealer. I dont mind buying undercoat if it is necessary but the way it was explained to me the pigmented sealer will do the job.

Anyone done this?

Sam

doh! - yeah wrong forum - I'm sure a mod will kick it soon.

640419 2008-02-14 23:45:00 Next time post this in the chat forum. :p Don't worry, I do it frequently too. Could a Mod move this please? ;)

I'd prefer to go with proper undercoat. While the pig sealer does work OK, it won't last as well as normal undercoat etc, and won't look quite as good IIRC. You can paint over it though. No worries.

640420 2008-02-14 23:53:00 Hi Sam,

Yes, you can paint straight over pig sealer; it's simply a high-solids primer. You might arguably get a better finish if you applied an undercoat first, but frankly, I wouldn't worry about it.

Primers are designed to allow better adhesion of paint to substrates, whereas undercoats have levelling compounds in them to give you a smoother surface on which to apply topcoat.

Are you planning on using an oil-based enamel, or an acrylic enamel for your topcoat?

Suggest you move this topic to the chat forum, unless you need to paint a computer!!! :D

640421 2008-02-15 00:20:00 ah! That was my other question.

I guess I am painting with aquanamel (sp?) It supposed to give a finish like enamel but easy cleaning as it is waterbased. Now if I have used oil based pig sealer then can I use a waterbased paint?

640422 2008-02-15 00:46:00 Yes, acrylic enamels are good, but they do have their drawbacks - they're much harder to apply that oil-based, and in a bathroom, need longer curing before you can let them get damp through steam. This isn't such an issue during summer though.

If you are going to use Aquanamel, invest in a really good synthetic bristle brush - this will save you a lot of hassle!! ;)

Pretty sure you can paint Aquanamel over pig sealer, but just check the back of the tin to be sure.

If you go the Aquanamel way, let me know, and I'll give you a few tips to get the best finish!!

Thanks nofam - Another time saving (why didnt I think of it before) idea was to paint everything in the same colour. Ceiling, wall, door window frame (not the aluminium part) all with the same colour.

We (meaning she) has not decided on paint colour yet but I will be going back to same store to purchase and will confirm with them that I can use aquanamel over pig sealer and also recommended rollers and brushes. Will get back to this thread when I get to paint stage. Cheers

Well long drawn out affair but have just rolled on first coat. Used mohair 5mm roller as recommended by storeperson. Cant say I am that impressed with the finish. I expected it to be a lot smoother but then I have never done this before so maybe I am just being fussy.
