789268 2009-07-05 21:53:00 My 8600gt is not cutting it anymore so I was thinking of buying a 9800gt.
my budget is <$250 and I hope the video card will last for a decent period of time.

I play at 1280x1024.

Thanks :)

789269 2009-07-05 22:14:00 Hi, yeah the 9800GT is probably twice as powerful as your current 8600GT, however you now at the stage where your single core 3800+ is a bottleneck..... SolMiester (139)
789270 2009-07-05 22:19:00 buy 9600 gt its better :) or 8800 but I think the 9600 gt on 256 bit is pretty good deal,its around 150 bucks I think. emes34 (11736)
789271 2009-07-05 22:46:00 In a recent build I put in a XFX PV-T98G-YHF3 Green Edition Geforce 9800GT 512MB, The guy had is computer over yesterday and it cuts up pretty much every game we threw at it, Crysis, far cry 2, flight sim X, L4D, supcom forged alliance and gta4. The 9800GT will do you very well.

But as SolMiester has pointed out your cpu could be the root of your issues, I have a 8600 GT and I am able to play all the games I said above with not much of an issue. I have a AMD 6000+ 3GHz Dual Core with 8Gb of ram on a 64bit system.

The fastest CPU you could have with out getting another mobo is a Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Socket 939... I cant actually find the cpu for sale so it might be worth looking at a AM2/AM2+/AM3 mobo and getting a faster CPU if your wallet allows it. (A 6000+ is $129.30 at oczone)

I got a AM2 Mobo So it can take up to a 6000+ (anything past the 6000+ it won't support)
Will games in the future (~3 years) prefer more CPU Speed over GPU Speed?

Thanks for your replies :)

789273 2009-07-05 23:22:00 Hi, you really need to check what CPU's you can get in that mobo, as a 6000+ isnt going to cut it for long either and I would surmise it as a waste of money....
Read this thread for idea to check your board....forums.anandtech.com

The 6000+ is a bit of a dog really, compare against the lowly E5200 $110NZ

Thats a 500Mhz advantage for the AMD, and it is still whipped by a stock Core2.....

You need either a Phemon II or a new platform.....

789274 2009-07-05 23:31:00 I bought the 6000+ when it was the best processor AMD made, now it's crock of **** compared to Intel's offerings. Definitely not a wise buying decision at the moment. wratterus (105)
789275 2009-07-06 01:37:00 Well sure if you have $3.5K you can slap a i7 system together on the cheep... Tuneznz (13203)
789276 2009-07-06 01:40:00 Upgrade to a Dual-core like the cheapy 7750 or go for a X2 250/550. trinsic (6945)
789277 2009-07-06 01:45:00 Well guys, the AMD 3800+ is getting elderly. BUT. Graphics matters more for gaming than CPU does.

I would suggest something more like the 4850 or 4870 though, the price has come down a lot, try and get as high end as you can.
And upgrade CPU and board later on when finances allow to Intel.
