640741 2008-02-16 20:56:00 The first half of my working life consisted of 30 years as a technician in a variety of industrial and research laboratories in UK, Canada, and NZ, and as a scientific writer and editor.

The second half was a complete change when I quit the rat race and took my growing family to a commune in the Coromandel and learned the difference between 'work' and 'employment'.

I also discovered the pleasure and satisfaction of physical work and self-sufficiency by growing food and doing my own building projects and a whole lot of other things that are only possible when the shackles of city life are broken.

Been back in town now for 20 years in retirement of sorts. Took up computers as a hobby when I finished building my present house ( a long project), and they became the major preoccupation. Eventually found that computers are great when working well but are nothing compared to the challenge and fascination when they're broken.

I help out* friends and friends of friends and sometimes the odd stranger who comes to the door, with whatever computer problem they're having. I never take any payment.

*With much thanks to the PC World crowd and all the contributers to Press F1 for help along the way.

640745 2008-02-16 22:20:00 I was really surprised by the variety of jobs that members have held. I'm a tech - fix up home & business computers & do a bit of networking (mostly small networks. the primary schools are the biggest networks I look after.) Greven (91)

640748 2008-02-16 22:53:00 Taught high school mathematics for over 40 years. Now, I am enjoying retirement and becoming more familiar with Linux. Along the way, i also was an instructor at the National Civil Defence School for 18 months, and drove a passenger shuttle for just over a year. (No stress with that one: no money either:o
