788990 2009-07-13 01:35:00 Ok performed the nVidia driver install using the website Speedy provided earlier.

No problems installing and it compiled the kernel module during install.

I have access to the nVidia X Server application in APPLICATIONS---SYSTEM TOOLS and clicking on this no longer results in an error message saying

You do not appear to be running the nVidia X driver.
Please edit your X configuration file.
(just run nvidia-xconfig as root and restart the x server

There are no options for me to configure in the nVidia X server settings applet so I figure I've obviously missed something here.

I still can't add extra effects from APPEARANCE----VISUAL EFFECTS
I get the following error message../

Desktop effects cannot be enabled.

If it helps.. when I run uname -r this is the output

2.6.28-13-generic

anyone have any ideas?

This is fun I have to say... I've learnt heaps just trying to get this driver installed... I reckon if I succeed, I'd give Ubuntu a full go as my primary OS for a while.

Thanks

788991 2009-07-13 01:39:00 Try this (ubuntuforums.org) Speedy Gonzales (78)
788992 2009-07-13 02:22:00 Thanks Speedy, but no joy.. when I run that command it says the following...

Couldn't find package xserver-xgl

I also tried running nvidia-xconfig before your suggestion but got this message...

The program nvidia-xconfig can be found in the following packages
nvidia-glx-173
nvidia-glx-180
nvidia-glx-96
Try apt-get install <slected package>

cheers,

788993 2009-07-13 02:23:00 I have tried to install xserver-xgl from the Synaptic Package Manager but there is no entry for it at all.

Is there any other way to get this?

788994 2009-07-13 03:03:00 The link speedy gave you was from 2007 - so fairly old now. Also - I just checked packages.ubuntu.com and they appear to be down atm - so I couldn't check on whereabouts of xserver-xgl. But FWIW that package does not exist in debian repos.

I don't think it should be that hard getting nvidia drivers up and running with Ubuntu. As Memphis said - it's usually a piece of cake.

In case you do want to try an alternative, PM me and I can send you a Mepis 8.06 CD - just specify 32B or 64B and where to send it. Also advise video card details (make/model) - and I can do some research for you.

788995 2009-07-13 03:11:00 Thanks Brooko,

already downloading Mepis 8.0.0.6.

Video card is an Asus V3800 (Riva TNT/TNT2 32MB)

cheers,

788996 2009-07-13 04:44:00 Ok - that might explain the problem with your drivers. That card is REALLY old ;)

I just looked up the linux driver for it and it looks like you need a specific driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.11. I'll do some checking the Mepis forums and see what I can find out.

Are you planning on using 32b or 64b Linux?
Brooko (8444)
788997 2009-07-13 05:08:00 will be using 32Bit.

I have downloaded the driver you spoke about but have not had any joy with it

Thanks again

788998 2009-07-13 05:54:00 Ok the downloaded version of Mepis I have seems to be a live -cd only.

Am I correct in making this assumption?
chiefnz (545)
788999 2009-07-13 06:08:00 OK - when you get it first booted, use the livecd default, and you SHOULD get the nv 2D driver. BTW - when you're at the grub screen - hitting F3 allows you to specify a resolution for your monitor.

At the kdm login, default logging for demo is 'demo' and for root is 'root'. Mepis does not use sudo.

There is a really, really good manual on the desktop. It is worth reading if you are new to Linux.

The installer icon is on the desktop.

If you have any questions - just let me know.
